got sent this statement in an email

ATM PIN NUMBER REVERSAL (GOOD TO KNOW)
If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM
machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse.
For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The ATM
recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in
the machine.

The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the
robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you.
 
This information was recently broadcasted on TV and it states that it is
seldom used because people don't know it exists.

Please pass this along to everyone possible.

Sorry, it's an urban myth, put together by somebody who gets a kick out of seeing people forwarding their odd message around the world.

If in any doubt with these things, google on (for example) "urban myth pin reverse" and you'll find out the truth.

Basically, the machine will keep your card if you enter the wrong number.

It sounds like an excellent idea - however - computers - while being excellent - are not human - and the functions needed for an operation like this would be endless - I could just imagine all the false alarms at the police station.

A good variation on that, would be if you could have a 2nd pin number that you could give the robber, so the system could work to do what the myth says

Only on the 3rd attempt, so you could actually try this out without losing your card, but it's pointless because it's not true anyway.
