Homemade disco snorkle Anyone done it?

Just wondering if anyone has made a homemade snorkle for a 200tdi- nearly always see safari ones? Anyone manage to make one that looks reasonable and functions as well as the safari/mantec types?

off work recovering from glandular fever and need something to do...........

The one discostu made on there looks the business.......has got me thinking about hacking my bodywork about a bit and making one. Now the 'box is finally back in.....Wil put the interior back together before taking further action methinks!!!

I had one made for my 300tdi for my Iceland trip.  Don't like Safari ones and Mantec were too expensive.  Including buying the mushroom top it came in at under £100....  Raised axle breathers into air box too!

Having fitted a snorkel, anyone notice any differences in performance at all, my disco is no rocket ship at the best of times, hope it wont be any more asthmatic if I do do a homebuild jobby?

Going to hopefully do it at some point either at the end of this week or beginning of next week, idea is currently to try and keep as clean airflow as possible, so going to try and use only two bits of piping one flexible bit to go airbox- nearly the bulkhead, one piece of straight pipe up the side of the windscreen............

When I fitted a Safari to my 300tdi DI there was a small but noticable increase in performance. I put this down to the less restrictive nature of the pipework compared to the original set-up, but I guess it depends on the state of tune of the engine too. It definitely wasn't any sort of ram air effect as t was most noticable at low speeds.

If you're really keen to minimise airflow restrictions then I'd suggest using as little flexible ductwork as possible. The ridges that allow it to flex will also slow down the air (theoretically, at least) and the fact that it can move will also absorb some of the energy of the airflow. Properly formed bends, even if you use drainpipe fittings, will be better for airflow. Having said all that, I'd hazard a guess that the difference is fairly marginal, though, particularly on a diesel engine.

I think its fair to say that this task is going to be faff-tastic. Ill have alook round the workshops tomorrow and see whats lying about and experiment a bit, im a bit concerned that my actual 'snorkel pipe' so to speak (the bit up the side of the screen) is going to have to be quite narrow and therefore will be quite restrictive but we'll see. Got to deal with a few rust issues as well tomorrow a friend is doing some welding and Im doing some rust preventing/removing  so should be fun.............

From memory, the Mantec design has a 63mm dia. pipe and I wouldn't go any smaller than that. The Safari is a good bit bigger.

Given the choice, I'd aim for something abot 75mm dia.

I did notice a slight dip in performance after fitting my snorkel and mine uses at least 2.5" diameter exhaust pipe...

I used Marley narrow drainpipe which IIRC is 64mm and it sits up the side of the windscreen at the drivers side and doesn't impact on vision noticably.    :D

As Darren already suggested... the bigger the better... no air no bang no go!   :(

Just checked and the pipe was 86mm!  Dislexia rules... KO!

ive been thinkin of doin this for some time but have been worried about restricting the engine,could i use piping the same size as the intake on the 200tdi air box? :roll:  becuase my mate can get me the piping and the bends from his work all i have to do is give him the mesurements and angles an weld it together  :D also where would i have to extend the axle breathers to??? :wink:

Probably going to do mine next week now, the inner wings being shot and needing sorting is taking priority at the moment. But as the wings are off I might as well faff about with it. Im going for the same size pipe as the inlet of the airbox, then going to fabricate myself a top similar to the mantec/safari types as I think this will be a bit less restrictive than a mushroom top (fingers crossed).

In terms of the breathers, go as high as you think your likely to wade...plus a bit extra!

Im going to go all the way to the top of the snorkel, simply because it looks a bit neater than just having pipes hanging around, plus one day i might get it really, really wrong..........who knows lol.
