Am I right in thinking...?
« on: September 13, 2007, 16:52:01 »
The front and rear axles on my 90 ('89TD with a 200 conversion) are a bit tired. Both diffs are knackered, front swivels are pitted, CV is clicking and the rear brakes are shot (leaks, brake cylinders etc) so I'm looking to replace them both.

My mate (200tdi K reg)has also been having problems - somehow his car has been stuck in difflock for a few hundred miles and now it won't come out. We presume he needs a new transfer box.

Now, we've been offered a good price for a 300tdi disco. Am I right in my belief that the axles and transfer box will swap over to our respective vehicles? I gather the axles should be 24 spline, have discs and slightly different drive flange arrangements, but essentially are the same. I'm also led to believe that although the 300 should have a R380 gearbox, it should have the same transfer box albeit with slightly higher (and better) ratios in.

Can anyone just clarify that this is the case before we buy it!!?

Cheers!

Simon.

Transfer box will be the same, but a 1.2 ratio if its off a Disco. (defender is a 1.4)

Axles are basically the same, but the front radius arms mounts should be different on the newer axle.  I think the older radius arms are thicker than the newer ones (could be other way round i cant remember) Output flanges may need swapping round to get them to match upto your props.

The diff lock lever/pin may just need a bit of persuading to come out of diff lock, bit of lubrication and some waddling on the lever.

Regarding the stuck diff lock I took mine apart on the RR and it wasn't very difficult, it's a very simple mechanism and before your mate starts swapping boxes I'd suggest he looks at a repair which with luck will be very simple.
