I can't belive what I've just read! I spent hours stood out on the RAC which it was then watching Richard Burns and Colin McCrae in action, I even managed to wangle me way in to a subaru service area once and actually spoke to Colin, he was one of the drivers that appreciated how close rallyng got to real people, it made my day being only 10 or 11!. I even picked up 3 detentions in 1995 when he won the world championship as I had Radio 5 on every lesson listening to stage reports.

Thoughts are with his wife and daughter, and other family.

Really sad news - one report I just read claims that there were 4 people on board, two of whom were children.

Colin Macraes dead and that's news because??? So are half a million other people and we don't get a thread devoted to them do we. Ok so he drove fast cars for a living big deal it didn't make him better or worse as a person then a road sweeper or a shopkeeper. But the next time one of them dies, I'll bet we don't have people queing up to offer their condolences. Crass hypocrisy is what it is.

For the millions of people in this and other countries that enjoy competing in, or spectating at stage rallies or just enjoy motor sport in general, the McRae family have brought a lot of pleasure
Colin was a genuinely nice person, as is his father and brother Alistair  (the only members of his family I have met and can therefore comment on)
If people who knew of him feel they have some affinity with, or just some sympathy for him and his surviving family, why do you think anyone would be interested in what you have to say ???

He was one of the few drivers out there who could:

A throw a car about like a wet pair o tracky bottoms,
B be one o the nicest guys you could meet
C be seen anywhere & still have time to sign autographs & chat to his fans

Him & his brother & father were the last o the true what i would say real drivers in motorsport,

Have to say but now we have lost both burns & mcrae there aint any really british drivers now that had the capability of either winning or giving it the full 110% & <edit> it off the road

Colin McRae. 1968 - 2007

He was dynamic, exciting and always on the edge. He was looking forward to continueing his career in marathon rallies and raids. His outstanding performance in the recent Baja events for BMW stood as a testament to his willingness to compete at the highest levels.

I will remember with fondest the footage of Colin kicking back and having a beer with Richard Burns - fierce competitors on track, best friends off it.

The motorsport world has lost a great ambassador. Many folk have lost a hero. A family has lost a son, a brother, a husband and a father.

Colin McRae RIP
