How do i remove the crankshaft pulley!

Simple one really, undone the 4 bolts securing the pully to the engine but cant get the actual pulley off, cant stop the engine turning either, it says in the haynes manual to put handbrake on, diff lock low box, and first gear but its still going.

Am trying to replace a snapped timing belt you see

Easiest way to to make a suitable puller. Just a thick bar with two 9mm holes in - 75mm apart, centre to centre. Screw the crank bolt in about half way and use two hi-tensile M8 coarse thread bolts through the holes and into two opposing holes that secured the pulley in place. The bar will press against the crank bolt and as you progressively tighten the two bolts they will draw the pulley body off the crank nose.

what are you removing it for ?  to do a cam belt?

Doh, just read your post properly  :roll:

You should only need to take the center bolt out to remove the pulley when doing a cambelt.

if you cant stop the engine turning you can try undo the bolt another way.  Put the socket on a decent length breaker bar, make sure socket is well on the crank bolt and rest the breaker bar on the underside of the chassis rail (steering box side) then flick the starter motor, it should come undone and you can then remove it by hand.

i held onto the breaker bar when i did mine, but it may be recomended once the breaker bar is in place, close the bonnet before you flick the key incase the bar snaps.

as above but disconnect the shut off solenoid so it dont fire up, alan....

It wont fire anyway cos the belt is snapped so the valves wont open as yet!  but it wont be much longer.

ouch, missed that. but id do it any way. have you lifted the rocker cover yet, you might be lucky . just a few bent pushrods. valves dont usually bend but rocker arms can brake. good luck. alan.....

Yeah, had the rocker cover off, rockers are intact, so just bent pushrods which i have purchased 8 new ones which will be alot easier than searching for bent ones.

Did one on a 2.5 td 90 a few months ago, to stop the engine turning over we put it in gear, parked against a wall, with a set of steelsons (pipe wrench) on the rear prop wedged on the floor. then undid it with a scaff bar on a breaker bar on the socket..........improvisational farm mechanics.........

Right, tried to do the breaker bar and turning the key thing and it did nothing, just hit against the chassis leg and stayed there and moved no further.

Any other ideas?  Am really needing to get this done asap now!

might need to do it a couple o times,

would advise slipping a length o scaffy over the bar as 1/2 inch bars flex waaaaay to much

Just make sure you do the crank pully up mega mega tight again though. When I purchased my disco nearly 2 years ago it had a recent cam belt change by a well known land rover place in Hampshire. I picked my new toy up, drove to Wales to see my mate. People said the autos arent very good up hills so struggling to 70mph on the motorway I thought this was normal.

Next morning I just had clouds of smoke and no go until I had smoked out Cardiff and the engine was warm it went. I thought wierd. Limped to another mate I was seeing that night and knows abit about engines. It turned out the timing had been knocked out slightly and the key way was worn big time in the crank pulley and the back of the crank pulley had been smashed to pieces.

Luckily I was introduced to a fantastic landy mechanic in Banbury that it went to and £800 later it was mended. this £800 was at a knock down hourly rate due to being introduced by a good friend of the mechanic. Any other garage I think I would have been looking at a bill of about £1700-£2000. Not what I needed 24hours after buying the car.  :twisted:  This nearly ended up with a new crank shaft but chemical metal luckily mended mine.

so caution. Make sure that bolt is done up as tight as it is now! I was told it needs to be done up tighter than the torque of the engine  :shock:

i have known people to put a drill in the flywheel hole in the bell housing but me i just get me air gun out and that does the trick if you were closer i come and give you a hand

there is a proper tool that screws in and locates in a hole on the flywheel ,it goes in the bellhousing drain nut hole ,  i used a  drill bit (shank end) it takes two to do it this way ,one to hold the bit in place until the other feels it lock when turning the pulley...then hold tight because the bottom pulley bolt is  F.T!!
