SAT Tyres, what are they?

Saw an advert where the land rover had a set on, what are they? Tried a search and came up with this

Doesn't tell me much though other than years ago people rated them.

they are millitary tyres AFAIK...

SAT - Firestone 'Super All terrain'.

They were a cross-ply tyre that were the BFG MT etc of their day. Even the Simex of their day. No longer made but much lamented because they were awesome.

Tyres today are probably better designed and built, but at the time there was nothing else like 'em.

Sats

those that are older than me will remember then as being the most aggresive tyres you could buy till the BFG mud came along

had a set of genuine SATS till just recently

Couldnt beat the drift you got on a wet roundabout with stiff sidewalled cross plys

That's the XCL!

Not as grippy as the SAT in the dirt, and equally as un-grippy on tarmac.

Deestone do a copy these days. The 90 I bought has 6.00x16's on it and they are *very* scary in the wet  :shock: 40mph around a gentle bend and it starts drifting!

I had a set on my old Disco
Rubbish on the road, far to noisy (I took of a set of BF Goodrich for the SAT's) but...
Drive off the road and they come alive
Loads of fun in most muddy situations
I loved them in the rough, but i hated them for the road use.
I got rid of them and fitted a set of Goodyears :wink:

Deestone is a copy of a Goodyear Xtra Grip not a SAT.

SATS are very similiar to general grabber SAGS both not good on road but amazing offroad! very upsetting how fast they wear down on the road tho!

Eyup, is that Deestone a copy of the early 205x16 Avon rangemaster? A much better tyre than the treadless thing they ended up making in 7.50x16 (but was very good on tarmac if you stop the dang things throwing chucks) ,

Brother in law had a set on his S2. Quite good they were too.

One obvious differeance though is that the SATs are a directional tread pattern which greatly improves self cleaning and will dig for Brittan if given half a chance. The

There is not a lot I don't like about my set of SATs (apart from driving on the road :roll: ), but it would be nice if they made them in bigger sizes like 8.25r16 or 9.00r16

Got a picture of the tyres on the 90. I was wrong about them being Deestone. The spare is a Deestone, but these are Lassa, whoever they are! Very similar to the SAT's. This is a 6.00x16 and very scary on wet tarmac  :shock:

Ok to confuse but maybe help clear things up too.....


V8 moneypit has a Lassa But Deestone did do a copy too that was in 6.00X16 pattern

Deestone are more well known for the pattern as shown by jim willy as that is what they did for the 7.50X16 size. And in turn deestone copied that pattern from the Goodyear Xtra grip as seen on early military landies.
As well that same pattern can be seen on chinese copies going under the names of Flamingo and Security.

Lassa also do a 7.50X16 called the LT/A which i might be wrong but i think Jim has had those before.

The SAG as seen on jakes old disco is another 'oldschool' pattern similar to the SAT in only the way that it works on the principal of a large shoulder void block pattern.

The SAT as seen in Eeyore's piccy was copied and is now for sale IIRC by Milner offroad it is in radial form and known as the mud plugga, And still wears very quickly on the road.

mate of mine used to trial a lightweight CCV back in the early nineties. he tried both SATs and the cheaper "mud plugga" copies. Identical off road but the mud pluggas were much better on road than the SATs. The SATs were apparently seriously dangerous on wet tarmac.

Incidently the deestones most of us know are a copy of the goodyear extragrip tyre. I had a very old and perished set of extragrips on a series 2A 109" that would squeal rubber on DRY corners if you were enthuiastic enough - and that was with an asthmatic 2 1/4 petrol!!
