I need to replace the belt and tensioner on my 300tdi Disco. So far.....

 :?: The belt is £28+VAT Genuine or £12+VAT pattern.
 :?: The tensioner is £60+VAT Genuine or £27+VAT pattern.

I have genuine belt and tensioner and it doesn't squeak, my dad has pattern parts and it squeaks a lot until it gets going, mainly the belt though i think.

its one of those things that you really shouldnt skimp on. If it goes wrong then the bill could be huge.

You might be able to find an OEM belt and tensioner (ie made by the people who sell them to landrover) you want a GATES belt, as they sell to Landrover..

not sure who makes the tensioners though...

theres a few things its just nice to know youve spent your money and done it right!
peace of mind, might all be a load of rubbish and pattern part much better than an origional ( it does happen), but belts, brakes etc, i always fit genuine.

My research is bringing up some interesting info.

ERR4708 is the part number for the tensioner and ERR4708G is for genuine tensioners. Many places show ERR4708G as a genuine item but put different makers name in brackets - usually DAYCO.

The cheapest I have found displays both pattern (DAYCO) and genuine (DAYCO) on the same page at different prices!!

Yes Gates make a lot of OE belts, I have one on mine and wouldn't fit any other type of aftermarket belt.

Latest update...

New GENUINE belt at Guy Salmon (Portsmouth) £12 Inc VAT.
New GENUINE tensioner at Guy Salmon (Portsmouth) £85 plus VAT.

The assistant kindly let me study the "GENUINE" tensioner and the casting clearly showed the manufacturer as DAYCO - same as the "PATTERN" ones that everyone else is selling.

 :lol: Bought the belt over the counter but will phone Mansfield 4x4 for the tensioner.

Didn't someone say Dayco were part of that big Indian corp that's trying to buy LR?

Anyway, I've fitted a couple of their pattern tensioners (D44 were a good price, better than paddocks :wink: ) and they are just as good as OEM.

Usually the belt is replaced as part of a kit - belt, tensioner, idler wheel, crankshaft sprocket, idler stud and nut, tensioner hex bolt, washer gasket, and timing cover gasket. The OE crankshaft sprocket has a spot welded shoulder on it that is prone to coming off - with resulting damage to the timing belt or worse if it breaks.  I buy a boxed kit from Bearmach - the sprocket shoulder is part of the sprocket itself and doesn't come off, and the belt is Dayco.
I always thought that Dayco supplied timing belts to L/R?

Yes it is the aux belt.

The reason for the tensioner change is two fold...

 :arrow: The bearing is going and with the tensioner away form the belt, movement in the bearing is obvious.
 :arrow: The rubber which connects the moving arm to the fixed pivot is collapsing. So much so that the front face of the tensioner (the plane of which should be parallel to the plane of the front of the belt) is tilting towards the engine.

The replacement is £27.50 from Mansfield 4x4 and my previous post show pattern part makers DAYCO to be the OEM manufacturer too.
