200tdi wont start???? any ideas
« on: September 23, 2007, 17:09:27 »
Ok really weird one here, my disco started fine first thing this morning on the button. Then after an hour or so of cleaning and titivating inside she refused to even try to start, not so much as a click from the starter....just a rapid chatter from the relay in the passenger foot well. But more strange is the fact that neither the centeral locking or the electric windows are working and they were all fine first thing this morning but everything else is working correctly.

any ideas people??? :?

Yep...flat battery.  An hour of the radio on shouldn't kill the battery though...or did the lights get knocked on?
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

No radio, and I'm sure the lights didnt get knocked on. The only thing on was the interior lights....not had this disco long so if the charging works as you all suggest , I think a new battery will be in order before the cold weather gets here and it leaves me stuck somewhere!

OK....now I feel really stupid

you are indeed correct, cheers, after an hour of charging the battery she sprang in to life!!! I guess the really obvious things we always pass off.

But if an hours use of the interior light is killing the battery its definately time for a new one!

If you are used to a normal spec battery, try a 334. It has 670 amps and is usually HD spec for Shogun.Pajero. It's what I had on my RR when it had the Paj engine and I swapped it over to the Disco when the RR went. Certainly turns the old Tdi over fairly sharpish!

More than likely the battery has a cell down, enough to kick it into life initially, but on a slow drain, well you found out that.

Get the battery load tested at a garage or battery specialist, but dont be too quick to buy from them, have a look around at prices and types before comitting

AArrggghhh, ok went and purchased new battery, installed it and still [!Expletive Deleted!] all   , so I thought I'd better make sure it was fully charged which it transpires it wasnt, so it got given a nice over night trickle charge and all was well with the charger( yes i desconnected it   ).....

.....came back from work re-installed and still [!Expletive Deleted!] all, hhhmmm duff battery ??? and sure enough it seems to have not held charge( to be changed today ) but out of need i charded the original battery, which altough not great has held charge.

Reistalled the old one and nothing, the alarm didnt light up, no c/l or windows, all lights work the dash lights up and now...not even a click from the starter relay, just one click on the key from under the dash???

Could my worries be the alarm/immobliser system?..if so how do i remove it?

Cheers in advance for any help.

I've ended up with a flat battery a couple of times (really MUST get a new one) and have te same thing with the Clifford on mine - if I disconnect the battery for  a minute and then reconnect, it usually cures it (have had to do it a couple of times on the odd occasion)

LOL.

No seriously, if you do need some bits, then let me know!

have you checked all the leads, iff ya a set of jump leads run one straight from the batt negative straight to the starter body (earth) see iff it makes a difference, then try on the live side from the pos side of batt, bit more tricky but this will illiminate all the batt leads and earth faults iff you have any, iff your sure you have full about 14 volts at the starter bridge the small terminal to the live . engine should spin over so watch your fingers. iff it does then its relay side of fault . see how you get on . alan.....

Check leads and earth strap, check the feed to the starter solenoid too.

I lost radio, cig lighter and ingnition a few days back, bodged/old age in imobliser wiring. Removed the damn thing, turns out the alarm shared a feed with that lot. I've managed to take out the fuse by knocking the cheap ciggie plug on the CB too.

I've had bad batteries from a well know national auto spares chain, 3 in a row on the Orion.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Ok...heres an update.....still nowt, all systems have power except doors, windows, and starter. Have no responce from door lock on alarm system and red led is not flashing...I have a feeling that the alarm module is the culprit???? can this box of [!Expletive Deleted!] and annoyance be bypassed? or Anyone breaking a 200tdi  disco and or  no-longer need of an alarm / locking module? ( even better if you have matching key fob with it )

Part number AMR2106  -   17vt, 418 mhz

also found in some RRC's

or anyone know how to by pass the unit?

cheers

iff it was a 300 it would be the spider unit but 200 as far as i know didnt have them. have you tried just briging  the small starter wire to a live iff its starting ok this way then it will most definatly point towards the relay or alarm circuit. alan....

Hiya, I once had a similar problem and it turned out to be the fusable links in the wiring harness next to the battery. If you follow the + lead from the battery you will see a braided section in the harness. cut this open and give all the wires inside a good tug. With a bit of luck one will just fall apart and that will be the problem.I repaired the wiring by soldering an inline fuse holder in and fitted a 25amp fuse.
Hope this helps

Knackered alternator would be my first thought, draining battery.
Try disconnecting it over night,  If battery holds charge...bingo  :D
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

Thanks Paul...never thought of the fuseable links.........

Bingo :D , upon inspection these are all pretty much knackered but 2 are completely disconnected, lets hope that this will resolve all the problems.

Off to maplins to get some fuse holders etc......25 amp ok for all 4? or do i need larger fuses, they dont list the rating in the manual

cheers

Sorted, one running disco \:D/ ...and a big thanks to paul!

All the crimp connectors for the fuseable links were just about shot, and werent in contact, me moving the battery must have been enought to finish them off.....so a quick temp bodge and shes up and running....now just to order some bits and do a more permenant job witha propper fuse box and some neat wiring.

Thaks to all for advice and suggestions :D
