Another lift question!

I finally got round to fitting the Celtic4x4 50mm lift on the TD4 yesterday. No problems at the rear but I'm not happy with the front.

Where you have to cut the body there is a structural member inside and you really have to remove the welded flange to get track rod clearance at full rebound. This is fine if you run a bead of weld along it, but on the passenger side there is a wiring harness running along there! Being typical Land Rover, there is zero slack in the harness, so it cannot be relocated. On this side, I've left the metal flange in place. I'd rather have the track rod bind on metal than wiring!

Also, I reckon the lower ball joints are necking out on full rebound. If this is the case, it is potentially dangerous. Anyone else found this?

One other thing! Have any of you found the front ends up with loads of positive camber after fitting this kit? I can't see that there is any adjustment on the Freelander.

Hi there V8, remember this post from Nov last year ??

"Hi Guys, I have had the Bearmach Lift kit fitted for some time and offroad /Green Lane quite often. If you do opt for their kit I would recommend fitting their camber pins, and taking it to a garage that can check the geometry too. Mine was a long way out after fitting and as I commute 140 miles a day, I couldn't afford to replace tyres any quicker than I already do !!"

The camber problem is taken care of by camber pins in the Bearmach Kit, I'm not familiar with the Celtic Kit so I can't comment on how or if they address it.
IMHO.. as I said above geometry check is a must.
On the 1.8 petrol there are fuel feed and return lines as well as the clutch hydraulic line to foul with the track rod joins !!

Ah yes! Should have looked back first!

I've ordered some pins from Bearmach. My colleague has camber gauges for his daughters race car so we can set it up if I can find the spec.
Anyone know what the camber setting should be on the Freelander?


Another interesting part of the previous thread was this:
"Think it is fine with 40mm lift but my V6 (and believe it is faily common) had a banging noise prior to fitting lift that nobody could diagnose...only occured when dropping down off somthing and we noticed when fitting lift this was probably what was causing it and when we cut this bit it and fitted lift it sorted the problem out."

Ours no longer crashes on rebound over bumps either.

Sounds like a plan ..... i've no idea what the settings are ?
I dont suppose the angles are in with the pins are they ??
I never fitted mine so I dont know....

A rarity for me, but I remembered to take before and after pictures.

If you are observant, you'll also notice the addition of a towbar. Had a busy day yesterday!

And the worst of it is that it's not even mine. Spent all Sunday afternoon grovelling around the work shop floor for 'er indoors! She's still insistant that roof lights would be 'useful'  :shock:  :lol:

when you mounted the tow bar did you have much problem removing the bolts on the towing eye as mine were a right pig with rust

they were stuborn right to the last thread :roll:

if she does want roof lights the best way to mount them on a 3 door is on a roof bar like on my old freebie.up to taste whether you like them or not.

Camber pins arrived today. Not over impressed for £40! I could have achieved the same results with a round file! All they allow you to do is adjust the top bolt of the 2 holding the strut to the upright. This could have been achieved by slotting the holes in the strut. Anyway, never mind. I've got them now so I'll use them.

Roof lights:
On a 3 door with glass roof - don't they light up the inside of the car?

And where would you run the wiring into the car? Not sure I want to drill holes in the roof.

I bought some black "composite" panels for the sunroof that dont let any light in.Genuine land rover for £5 on ebay.would offer them to you for postage but both sets went with the freebie when I sold it.
I just ran the wires through the sunroof and then under the trim.you see a few inches of wire from the sunroof to trim but not too bad.

Motors looking great....think it was me who posted about the banging on rebound...as far as cutting goes, didnt have to cut all the way just about 5-10mm and has not banged since....wheel alignment on mine has been fine since doing lift but did add spacers at same time which could make a bit of difference...Enjoy

When ours is jacked up so the wheels are at full rebound there was only about 5mm between the track rod and the body. When the steering was turned, it immediately fouled. I cut down to the doubler on the inside and it still fouls on the track rod adjuster when the steering is turned. Obviously, it is pretty unlikely to get to this when in use, but in theory it could and I'd rather it was right.

Anyway, I've got the camber pins and borrowed a camber gauge. Just waiting for the local main dealer to come back with figures.... might be a long wait  :roll:  :lol:

Well, the local main dealer didn't seem too enthused with helping me, so I went through one of my trade contacts who came up with the Land Rover build data within an hour! Top man!

I now know what I'll be doiing this Sunday!
