Go for it.

But its not easy to pass the immigration requirements.

Over 30?
Speak French?
Work in a 'growth industry'? (IT, medical, oil exploration etc)

What sort of environment are you used to? Pretty much every environment from the UK is recreated there but Canada isnt protected by the Gulf stream so it gets COLD.

PEI, Newfoundland etc, very like Wales in may ways but flat. Well worth a Visit. Closest to the UK is Ontario. BC is a bit more American, Alberta rocks though ;).

There are special concerns etc for certain jobs. Having lived over there for 4 years its well worth it though, dont expect it to be cheap to do. Theres a lot to consider and if you want to ask anything please feel free to PM me. Start by taking a holiday out there,m try some of the places you want to move to. http://www.cic.gc.ca is where you need to start reading. There are solicitor firms that will handle your application for you too.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Theres a trick.

If you apply outside Canada it can take YEARS.

However you are allowed to stay there a visitor for 6 months, THEN unlike the UK you can indefinately extend your stay in 6 month increments provided you can support yourself. Applying for landed immigrant status from within Canada actually only took me a month.

The easiest way to do it is go over a few months and leave the family. While you are there scout out jobs and housing, you'll score BIG points if you have a job waiting. If its a job you can prove you can do better than the locals then even better. A company can sponsor you as well if they wish but its a minefeild. Once you have landed status you can work on bringing the rest over (your children will automatically qualifiy as will your spouse), the problem is proving that you can support yourself over there untill your application is processed, hence leaving them over here for now :)

Yes, seemingly a large proportion of the British Police Force, such as PC Copperfield   (barring those who have already been poched by Australia & New Zealand)

On a more serious note, SWMBO keeps mentioning it every so often

Then again, it's not too long since the company she now works for asked her (when she was still in the NHS & helping in the bidding process to negotiate a £300-million contract) if she wanted a job in their Dallas office!!
They offered (verbally, at that point) to cover re-location expenses

I do alsorts but i'm qualified as a mechanical engineer, construction foreman, retail manager and ice instaler. I'm also an apprenticed welder/fabricator and a stockman/farmer. Oh and currently i'm on a general manager training program with the council. So not that short of things to do just whether they are things canadians want.

my brother in law was toying with the idea, made a phone call to I think the Canadian Embassy who gave him the once over, because he has a trade and money in the bank he was told that he was eligable and he could emmigrate. They send him a load of forms etc but he never followed it up.

I'd like to go out there, somewhere where it is cold, always snowy and in the middle of no where, do you remember that old canadian soap, can't think of the name but he was a radio DJ, there was a moose in the opening bit.

Well anyway, that'd be cool  8)

not sure what the laning is like out there though

I paid £60k ($130,000) for a mahoosive brand new build 4 bed :)

I'll find my pics from a week out exploring and upload them. I didnt get any on the Alaska Highway trip though, and that was hairy.
