What to do?
« on: September 25, 2007, 18:16:47 »
Im in two minds at the moment, i bought a series 3 88" a couple of months back and have been sorting it for a summer project, its now time to head back to uni.  I was wandering if anyone could help me value the car and is it worth chopping it in for a 200tdi or something that i may be able to make the 100mile trip to uni in once in a while.  Is it worth sticking a montego (perkins prima in it) and running it or just to sell it and buy something with a turbo pre fitted.
thanks
aaron

Prima

Helped my mate do a prima conversion on a series 3 109, yet to drive it as it needs a few finishing touches (Brakes, Exhaust, Air intake re-plumbing), Engine swap isn't too bad, sourcing all of the correct bits was a bit of a faff though.
They can be tweaked to be as powerful as a 200tdi, and they are a hell of a lot lighter!
difficult to find a prima that isn't Dog tired these days though....

I regularly do the 100 mile trip from uni to my perents in my diesel series, not a problem at all!

Wether I'd keep a 2.25 diesel in your landy would depend exactly when it was built.  If it was before august 1979 I'd leave it with the 2.25D as they are, contry to what some say, good engines if they have been looked after.  Don't expect it to do more than about 55-60mph with an overdrive though.

If the engine is a nail or its registered after 1st august 79 I'd change the engine.  The resion being it'll need to pass an imissions test which can be a struggle for the 2.25D unless they are in really good nick.  Running biodiesel seems to help.

Primas can work well if they are properly ajusted, but my preferance is a bigger more sloggy engine so I'd go for a 2.5 sherpa or a 200tdi, probubly minus the turbo to save the gearbox (though turning down the boost should be another way of achiving this, still got the hassle of plumbing in the turbo though - if its not there it can't break so that'll keep running costs down!

As for selling it and getting something already 200tdi powered, thats an option.  I guess it depends on what you think is accepterble insurance wise (I assume your quite young).  Most Series vehicles are worth very little and insurance, even with mods is often also very resionable.  Coil sprung landys seem to atract a much larger premeum and discos are worse.  Something you might want to take into acount.

yeh im only 20 nearly 21 which doesnt help my insurance was pretty good on it, i may have to ask them about engines etc, im not sure whenit was registered off hand. do you knwo much about running biodiesel as i looked into it and it wasa confusing area tax wise, i may look into a 200tdi but it seems an expencive option and sherpa van bits are hard to find
is the 200tdi a big job i guess its new mounts and stuff,
