I DONT BELEIVE IT!!
« on: January 07, 2005, 22:27:00 »
  Ive just received an email from my web-site server company. You see ive been trying to edit my site for a phew days now and wondered why i couldnt access my site-studio ( site edit program ). Apparently there server went down over xmas and they did not or have lost all the back-up files for all there customers web-sites. So to cut a long story short my current web-site as it is can still be veiwed but if i want to add say any pictures or text etc, ill have to start all over again from scratch and my original site will be lost.

The time it took to do this site and all for nothing.
Ill have to restart and build another site before i can add anything new, unless theres a way of saveing presant site so i can upload it page by page onto new site?.. Ill have to look into this.

Going to have a phew double whiskys now.

Hopefully the next web-site i do will be better anyway, and yes ill put it through spell checker first
If in first you dont suceed, try second....
If it aint broke, your not trying ard enough....

2 things:

1) If it can be viewed then the files are still sitting somewhere and are recoverable, apart from the unlikely event that they're cached.

2) If it can be viewed, you can rip the html and images off the site (there are bits of software to let you do this), save them locally, et voila.  This won't help if you have much scripting.

Oh, and 3) Give your ISP a hard time for not backing up...  I work for a major backup & recovery software vendor :)

And while I think about it, 4) You could try the Wayback Machine and also the google cache of the various bits of your website to recover bits and pieces.

I can get you a complete copy of your web site without any trouble.   The issue is how it is created / hosted.

If you normally upload everything via FTP then it's easy.   If you have to use their site creation tool to get the pages online, then it may not be so easy.

PM me if you'd like to discuss...

One thing for sure is that im giveing them some right stick about this via emails. All they do is appologise, theyve not wavered my next monthly fee though

When it comes to p.cs im not much cop, so trying to put this right myself is a no go im affraid. So ill just have to rebuild another one and learn from previous mistakes. Im also stuck with this company until my contract is finnished other wise ide go and use someone else. :(

As i said earlier, im not very good when it comes to computers and all that but thanks anyway. My head might explode if i have to do any program type stuff. This is the reason why i liked the site builder i used to make my site, it was so easy to use i didnt have to know any html gargon because it had a built in html editor, site settings, picture edditer even sorted out how i wanted the pages to look, just picked a template and it replicated this on every page unless i changed text colour/size or background colour. A 3 year old could use this web-site builder its that easy to use.

O r are they just trying to fob me off :?

My guess is that they have lost the database files which hold your site configuration, which is a bit poor really, since it's not like you can keep a backup yourself.

Hi Tim, i think this is what the problem is now youve put it in simpler terms for me. Ill just keep nagging them until they sort it out, if they dont im sure ill be intouch with you guys again. At least someone cares, cheers lads  :D

I think its about time i read some books on the subject and learn more about computers and programing etc. Ive never been any good with this sort of thing but my mate who is not a mud-club member is very good on computers and baffles me with some of the stuff he does.

:(  Ive just received an email from them saying. Weve had great problems with the server that deals with site-studio ( which i use to build and upload web-site ) and unfortunatly weve lost all website content and we do not have back-up of the data.

So im affraid ill have to start again and theyll change ftd add to there new server. I can now use the site builder program but ill have to start again from scratch, they cant upload my website to new site studio server so they say. Think ill go else where, pity really the site builder was so easy to use once ide got used to it. :(
Ill still be useing the website address offroadpeaks.co.uk so watch this space for my new and improved wedsite..... eventually, fingers crossed, touch wood and all that. :D

This techie stuff is over my head but on a legal note, are you paying them? if so they have a responsibility to you for the service they provide!

Sale of goods and services act 1974 (ammended 198something) states that " the customer is entitled to be re-embursed to the financial position they would have been in had the good or servisce not been faulty"!  They owe you for your time at the very least!
Their responsibility is to repair, replace, refund in that order, but this is harder to apply to a service than to goods obviously.

If you pay them by credit card you're also protected by the consumer credit act, the card company should wade in on your behalf as a last resort.

So very much depends on their Service Level Agreement.  For internet companies that normally means that there are plenty of exclusions to cover loss of data, provision of backups, service uptime, blah, blah.....

I'm not suggesting giving up... but don't expect miracles.

Mike,

Can you move to a different hosting company and tell them where to go ?

there are plenty of hosting compnaies out there, and I'm sure there are enough people in mud club that can advise on the best way forward etc.

personally I use flump.net for my hosting, which is linux based and you can use what ever software you like to build the site and to upload it, you also have the facilities to take your own backups.

If I were you I'd tell em where to stick it and move companies.

I'd be more than happy to assist with rebuilding.

I agree. If you are paying monthly, stuff the contract. They have not met their part of it and have let you down. Stop your payments and go elsewhere.

After all, are they really going to pursue you for a small monthly fee?

If you can still see your site when you load it then this software may be of some use to you.  All you do is type in your address then it will go about downloading the entire site in to a directory on your computer. It’s only a trial version but will work for 30days
