Round spots on a light bar...hmmm...
« on: October 16, 2007, 08:37:01 »
I'm thinking about adding a light bar, but for some reason I don't really like the small rectangular spots you usually see on them.

So I'm thinking about one of three options and wanted to know if people had done it and if they had any photos.  Bear in mind I don't have a roof rack so I just want to make sure it will look OK...and daft question but did anyone notice any adverse effects on fuel consumption or wind noise after fitting?

Which lamps offer good quality but at the best value?  I know LRO did a test, I'd really like something that has a "sidelights" option in either black or possibly brushed stainless (eound kinda match my Southdown snorkel and alloys) and I don't want to spend stupid money!

Options are...

1-Windscreen light bar, 4 small round spots (sure I've seen this and it looks OK)

2-As above but 4 large round spots (same size as normally found on A bars, 5" or so).

3-Converting my front roof rail into a removable light bar...just clip it in and connect a plug and away you go.

Finally, wiring.  I know there are some threads on "standard" wiring, what I'd really like would be the following options...sound complicated and I am rubbish at electrics, can it be done?

"Sidelights" switch so I can switch on manually...for fun!
"On" so I can just put them on and leave them for offroading, regardless of what vehicle headlights are doing
"Main beam dependant" so they will come on with main beam if I want them to.

As mentioned, any pics of a D1 without a roofrack and with round spots would be great.  Want to make sure that it will look more
  :D  :D  :D  :D  rather than being a bit  :(     :?

Thanks in advance!

I have a light bar doesn't make any noise its wired on, off, on with main beam. Evilgoat kindly posted some very good wiring diagrams a little while ago, as for fuel consumption i've seen no difference.

Nice one Steveo, the bottom one is roughly what I want to do, although the piccy is a bit blurred...looks like you have a roofrack too, I know it looks fine with a roofrack as Jas278 has got them...I just want to make sure that it does not look a bit odd without a roof rack but with big spots.

Barmiebrummie...looks good mate!

I think this is the post Karlo is talking about.

And here is my version of the diagram... I like to put things into a more pictorial form so I hope it helps!  8)

Anyone that spots any problems with this diagram... please let me know!

Skibum

[EDIT!] You will of course need to earth each of your lights! They can be earthed to a good local earth, like where the light bar is bolted on. Make sure you've got a good earth there though!

Also, if your putting something bigger than 55w bulbs in... you'll have to do the math yourself!

[EDIT 2!!] The image is in my "Misc Diagrams" gallery and may be easier to read!

Beast5680, that's what I was after, thanks.

Looks OK...in fairness a roofrack would look better, but for some reason I prefer your round lights to square ones...thanks for posting!

Barmiebrummie and Wizard, what are your respective light units?  They both look very neat, are they the x-eng ones?
