sealing 300 series airbox?????
« on: October 19, 2007, 02:37:59 »
ok nearly done my snorkal now, just got to put it all together now, and i must say its been a hard task making and fitting a home made designed snorkal.... and no its not just drain pipe from B&Q...

ive had to cut, drill, saw, file, weld, spray, etc........

but forget all about that, mainly i just want to know how alot of people go about sealing a 300series airbox (the square type)... because even tho ive manged to done mine, it didnt go as easily as expected.......

ive got a KnN replacment filter on mine and when the airbox is fastened down i thought that the seal around the air filter would have sealed it, but when placed into a bucket of water the box filled up very quickly which was a shock to me  :o the air filter just didnt seal aswell as i thought it would do!!!!!!

did any of you lot have the same problem and was there an easy fix to this problem?????
I LOVE MUD!!!!!! but my engine doesnt

I have a safari snorkel and a normal air filter and submerged my disco under silly depths of water and not a drop in the air box.

I think it could be the seal the KnN one makes possibly?

i think in the safari kit you get a 'plug ' to put in the bottom of the airbox with shi* of silicon sealent... to make it tight...

Yeah. the original place the air goes in is blanked off, screwed in and siliconed in then a new hole is drilled into the side. the old hole is at the front and very low down.

Also the air box has a bracket that gets moved accross nearer the drivers side and is a pain to remove 1 catch as you have to prize the power steering fluid reseviour out the way each time.

adam seal it all with silicone, let it set and stike the old girl up
put your hand over the top of the intake and the engine should stall
if it does, its wetproof  :)
and now you have no reason not to get into the coffin end o month

the main part people forget when making a deep breather for a 300tdi is the old wd40 cap to cover the airbox drain hole stick this in with silicone

I have tried this trick with my hand and unexpectantly with my air filter being well blocked up too! My disco never stalled though but the revs did drop off alot.

I have submerged my engine under silly depths of water and seems to be fine. When my hand grows bigger it might have more effect at stalling it as covering bigger area of the snorkel top!!!

Yep - best way to test a snorkel ...... put your hand over the top. If it stalls, then the seal is good (jsut need big mits like me :D )

youve got a leak then
if its a tdi, i derv relys on air, if your cut its supply it will stop, but itll run(rubbishly) with a very limited amount,
the water dump provids just enough air to keep it running

however going in deep water and getting stuck in deep water is a different matter
go get stuck in water over the bonnet at rest, and ill give it 5 mins before it has no throttle response
then 6 mins before its silent
