Discovery V8 mpg's - search did n't help
« on: October 22, 2007, 21:57:40 »
Sorry, you've probably all already written this in lots of other threads but a search gave 54 pages !!!!

I'm seriously considering buying a Disco. I don't know what size V8 engine I might get but before I buy a 300 TDi with my head my heart wants to know what mpg you guys get from your V8's.

I'm not LPG-ing !!!

Please state your engine size.

Thanks,

David

Driving style and conditions makes a huge difference here. The 4.0V8 in my last DII returned around 14mpg in town and up to the giddy heights of about 21 on a nice steady run. I can't imagine the 3.9 in earlier models being significantly different.

It's almost a case of 'if you have to ask...'

Crikey, I tore down to Essex yeasterday, on LPG which of course lowers the MPG, and I did the sums earlier.

12.8MPG \:D/

Very pleased with that, especially as it runs on what is effectively refinery waste.  I guess that's equivelent to about 14-16 on petrol?

I've not had mine long ( 1994 3.9EFI ) - but I've ranged between 11.8 in town running to 20.5 on a 200 miles motorway cruise.

I've not done anything to it yet - i.e. electric fans, servicing, tuning etc, so I'm hoping I might inprove the average by 1 or 2 mpg...

One press of the right hand pedal will do that.  :D
Mine returns 14-15 on every day stuff 19-20 on a motorway run using the cruse control. Mind you I don't treat it gently, if I was going to drive slowly I would have brought a diesel (steps back and wait for the slap).  :P

Disco 3.9 auto ~ does around 20mpg on a good day, but I always run it on gas so roughly double that for LPG, £ for £ (why don't you want to LPG it........?)

Defender V8 3.5 gives 15 on a good day, but 'normal' driving gives single figures.

My Defender 200tdi gives better MPG than the V8, but less/equal to the LPG, so I'd always have a V8 LPG over deisel anyday.  (So why did I buy a 200tdi? :-s )

Can't beat the V8 sound!

mines a 3.9 v8 and its doing about 19 to 20 mpg and towing a caravan its worse i wish i had bought a diesel so if you can shop around untill you find a good one well worth it.oh and dont forget with a diesel you have got the veg oil option as well.yes the speed and sound of the v8 is fantastic but when your down the local filling station every 300 or so miles banging in 80 plus quid that sound and power wears a little thin and i would imagine that the diesel is just as capable off road as the petrol and probably better if you want to go wading(thats pure speculation as i have never driven a diesel) hope you find what you are looking for bruv.

Mmmmmm.........   I see what you mean now Bulli. Wish I hadn't worked mine out.

Round town on lpg just over 8 thats with my weighty lead boots. On a run steady, 20 ish. For petrol add 2-3 mpg. this is with the auto Disco in my avatar loadsa very none aerodynamic mods.

Whats worse I have just sold my tdi and bought a 200 series, 3 door, v8   why? Go start one up and it never fails to raise a :D .

I don't do a lot of miles weekly so not such an issue for me.

A friend of mine who has a v8 found the petrol bills a bit steep bought himself a diesel laguna for work travel etc as he works an hour away.

Funny you should say that. When we had our caravan we found that it didn't make that much difference maybe 1 mpg but nothing to write home about.

Now sold the van as missed sleeping under canvas.

Thanks guys that's been very helpful in putting that one to bed.

I used to have the 110 V8 in the avatar (apologies to the new owner if you're reading this, it's probably really bad of me to have an avatar with somebody elses car on it!!). I loved the power and sound of the LPG's petrol engine and when buying my new disco the money would go further in terms of the initial outlay.

However, having thought about it a lot since the sale I reckon I always had trouble keeping the engine running well in between services. It would be great after the specialist had sorted it but within a few weeks I think the smoothness would begin to drift. Also, the tank took up a lot of space (I had mine in the "boot" cos I off-road) which I found a pain in the 110 - it would be unbareable in a disco. I got fed-up of going out of my way to the gas station all the time. I'd have trouble with water when I'm wading and finally, I do dream of driving down to Morrocco or the like and it would never happen in a petrol car even if it was LPG'd.

No, it's a 300 TDi for me.

many thanks,

David

As I've been using an LPG V8 3.9 since March 1999, I suppose I'm used to planning journeys to encompass LPG refuelling sites, which has improved greatly since there's well over 1000 fuel sites in the country (haven't actually checked how many today), but used to be around 300 in 1999.

I don't mind occasionally running out of LPG and doing about 10-20 miles on Unleaded, since it gives the chance to properly lubricate/wash the fuel injectors, as mine is not an injected LPG System.

Best Motorway average on LPG 19mpg at 60mph.

Average on Unleaded 18mpg, average on LPG 17mpg, a saving of ~31% CO2 emissions by my calculation.

Currently, I get LPG from a 24/7 Contract Gas Site within 5 miles of my home, or occasionally a local BP Site (52.9p, eek!).

I must admit to being a bit of an environmentalist, so am currently considering a 300TDi and elsbett conversion, to run exclusively on SVO, to make my transport virtually carbon neutral, and improve wading ability

Mines a 96 3.9V8i.

I run a gardening business and tow an Ifor Williams trailer daily. Towing can range depending on load from around 7mpg up to around 12mpg. With out it i have recorded approximately 16-17 around town driving ( i do have a rather healthy quest for kickdown!!   ) and about 20ish on a run.

Im going to be selling mine very shortly as im after a defender with a turbo diesel or 200tdi engine. I want to run that on SVO. Plus i want to go wading!!

Mines a 4.0 disco 2 on LPG I get around 13-14mpg around town and around 16-17 on longer journeys. However I am content with it at the moment although my local ASDA have just upped the price from 42.9p per litre to 44.9p per litre. The best I have had on petrol alone was 20mpg on a long run where I couldnt fing any gas. As I only have two 36litre tanks it becomes a bit of a pain finding it and I have regular stalking trips up in the north of Scotland where LPG pumps are few and far between only five gallons of petrol capacity doesnt help matters.

Cheers Remmy7

Hi,

i averaged about 14 mpg, but to enable me to afford to run the disco, i bought pugsley.

sonar is now just a toy to be taken out when i feel like it, altho i really miss not driving it daily, but as someone else said £80 every 300 miles gets a bit pricy (pugsley does 600 for £55)

sonar being a DII 4litre V8 and proud of it.

i have now decided that i will not lpg sonar as i no longer drive around sufficiently to warrant it

regards

I've sneaked over from the dark side (Range Rover territory), but I hope my two pennorth is not totally unappreciated.

Until February this year I had a 1990 RR 3.9 V8.  On petrol, it averaged around 16 mpg no matter what it was doing, and I had a job on keeping my speed down when towing the caravan - I think if I had let it, then it would quite happily have done the ton down the M5 with the BWSOW on the back!

It had a multipoint LPG conversion (RRB can tell you more - he sorted it out for me) and averaged 12 mpg, towing or otherwise.  I could not tell the difference between gas and petrol when I was driving it, and RRB reckoned if anything it was slightly more powerful on LPG.

I now have a 1994 RR 300TDi.  On holiday in Wales this summer it averaged 22 mpg towing the BWSOW and 30 solo.  It has just had a new head, water pump, injectors etc. so I will need to get the calculator out again soon.  Okay, it's not quite as quick as the V8, but is that a bad thing when towing?  Personally, I don't think so.  It will comfortably (shall we say) keep up with the traffic on the motorway (HWTHSBO and I don't exactly hang about) and it is not embarrasingly slow.

I did go out laning on one occasion in the V8 round Derbyshire and had a job on to keep up with Tim M in his diesel!  He and the V8-powered RRB were dots on the horizon.

I do miss the V8 burble, but if I need a 'fix' I can always get in touch with RRB in the next village.  Heart says the V8, and with the LPG kit the two cost about the same to run, but head is beginning to say diesel.  In Wales this summer, with the 300TDi, we covered over 300 miles.  We filled up twice - on arrival and the day before coming home.  In Somerset last summer, we covered maybe 500 miles in the V8 and were filling up every day  - luckily that time the nearest LPG point was round the corner.
Jeremy Clarkson's worst nightmare - a woman driver in a 4x4 towing a caravan
