Talking of colours, are all whites equal?
« on: October 23, 2007, 10:38:36 »
My 110 is white and some bits are in need of some TLC. I've heard various names given to white paint (shire white is one that springs to mind) but don't know how different they are, or whether they are all the same colour that have been periodically 'rebranded' by somebody in marketing.

Unfortunately, I can't just ask for 'the white used in 1987' as mine has quite a few later panels (roof, wings, bonnet, bulkhead). It all matches (except the bonnet, which is rubbish) but I don't know what's been matched to what!

Can anybody shed any light for me?

My '85 has at least 3 different whites on it caused by various repairs and refits over the years so I would hazard a guess at 'No' - or the people who did the work were carp<?>

I think the paint code is on a plate near the brake servo - should be 3 letters and 3 numbers, a paint place can then supply the right colour......but as for which panels are painted with the right colour

Another point to watch out for are cheap non genuine paints, My brother found this out when touching up one of his cars. The cheap (halfrauds) paint which claimed to be an exact match was actually quite a creamy colour compared to the genuine white.

Thanks guys. I think I'll go for whatever the white used on later models is. Mine has been fitted with a smooth roof (in fact, the more I look at it the more I think the whole body has been replaced  ) and that looks the same as later ones.

Before it got repainted, mine was 'Chawton White' - I'll dig out the code later.

LR paint codes are listed at http://www.stephen.hull.btinternet.co.uk/nonmetallic.html

Not that it'll help with which white has been used on yours.

After removing all of the obvious non-starters (too early or too late) I think I've narrowed it down to one of these three

COLOUR WHITE                                                     YEAR  CODE
354        Ivory White, Chamonix White, Davos White 84-90  LRC.354

603       Chawton White 2ct                                      98-    LRC.603

Anybody know when the smooth roofs were introduced? It's the one panel that I can probably date the easiest and that definitely hasn't been resprayed.

Mine is a smooth roof, and was LRC.603 - Chawton White.....but that still doesn't really help you  :?

I think the smooth roof came in with defender models 1990 onwards.
I'd go for the middle colour "Alpine White"  :D
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

Thanks guys.

The first thing I want to paint is only a small part so I might just get a rattle can of Apline and give it a go.
