Swing Away Wheel Carriers - Servicing
« on: October 23, 2007, 19:15:13 »
My 90's got a swing away spare wheel carrier on it, and recently there is a lot of play in it when the door is shut (about a centimetre).

I can hear it rattling now when driving.

Is there anything to to service on them? With the spare removed, there is a nut, and a lock nut, but turning them seems to have little effect. The rest seems to be behind a welded steel plate.

Any ideas?

It looks like this one

All depends on the make of carrier you have fitted (can't see your photo as all I get is a red X).

The WH one on my 90 is 7-years old and apart from regular greasing of the grease-nipples on the pivot points I have not had to make any adjustment at all and it is still nice & tight. Many years prior to this I fitted a Pivlock one to my old S111 and all that ever needed was the rubber buffer shimming out to keep it from rattling but that was all.
As you make no mention of a rubber buffer or shims I assume yours is a different make & design (there are plenty around).

Mark

on the mantec type there is a nut behind the carrier that adjusts the plunger mechanism that fixes to the door.  this can make a difference.
