Hi all, just a quick and simple question... do we have to have some sort of red reflector on the rear of our vehicle?

There is no size requirement.
My bike has small button type reflectors if you are strapped for space
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

I have a stonking great peice of red and yellow Scotchlite(tm) too :)
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Stick on ones here - cos it's a HD rear bumper (doesn't have end caps)

I don't think scotchbrite on it's own is good enough, shame really, but reflector have to be E marked like lights do so I'd guess if they carry the mark then they're big enough to do the job.

BTW, how many people do you see with red traingles on things like bike racks? traingles are only suppposed to go on trailers and triangles with white borders on comercial trailers.

Reasons for a reflector to fail:

This inspection applies to: Obligatory rear reflectors only, that is, those required by regulations to be fitted

1. There are not two red reflectors facing to the rear or not fitted symmetrically, one on each side of the vehicle

2. A reflector
a. not facing the rear
b. not in good working order or in clean condition, ie so damaged or deteriorated that its function is impaired
c. obscured*
d. insecure
e. obviously incorrectly positioned**

*At least 50% of the reflecting surface must be visible from the rear

**The precise position of rear reflectors is not part of the inspection, but visually check that all reflectors are at about i. the same height, and ii. the same distance inboard from the side of the vehicle

Reflective tape Reflective tape is not acceptable as a substitute for a rear reflector.

Optional reflectors Any additional reflectors fitted to a vehicle other than reflectors required by regulations are not included in the inspection.

Rear reflectors are not required by regulations if the vehicle is not fitted with any front or rear position lamps etc

I'll admit to doing that as I use a trailer light board, I'd rather have the wrong reflectors than do what many others do and assume you can see my rear lights through the bikes wheels.
