Aerosol respray
« on: October 24, 2007, 22:17:18 »
Has anybody done a complete respray using aerosols?

If so what paint did you use?

Where did you get it?

How many tins did it take?

Were the results worth it?

autopaints offer a custom mix facility for £6.99 a tin.  I have provided the code for G4 orange and am awaiting a response.

The other option is plasticote @ £5 a tin.

The car is greenlane scratched and will be again so a showroom job is not necessary.

Any responses, comments and piccies greatly apreciated.

It'll be cheaper to hire a compressor & spray gun and just buy a few of litres of paint in the colour you want.
If you're going to do a half decent job then you'll need 2-3 cans to do a wing. So going by that then I'd say you'll be needing somewhere around 30x500mm cans of spray which will cost around £200.

A litre tin of cellulose paint in the colour you want is £13.50 and you can hire a compressor and spray gun for £66 a week from HSS.

agreed, spray cans are fine for a touch up on something your not over bothered about (black over bumpers, dedicated toy etc) but if you want to do the whole motor, its not worth your time and the amount of cans doing it that way. there is more than likely a second rate bady shop nearby who would charge a reasonable price if you prep the body yourself. ie, rub down, maybe prime, mask up on the day etc. i was quoted £200 to do my pickup in the smae colour... as long as i prepped ity with him. also consider the variety in tins, i`ve had halfords, holts etc.. and all have at some point let me down with the likes of blocking nozzles, iffy colour mix etc.

1 tin = one colour, one consistancy..

Thanks for the comments.

Although you are right about a local body shop, I have a major overhaul planned for the disco over the next 2 months including:
Boot floor replacement
Veg kit installation
Roof rail removal
fit rock sliders
fit new rear lights
fit reciever point in rear bumper (which will be modified and then shot blasted)
I also intend to replace all the window seals and try and fix all the water leaks.
As such the car will be pretty well stripped out I will only have to remove handles etc. and the car will be perfect for a respray.  As such getting it to the body shop may be akward without windows etc.

The idea of hiring a spray setup has crossed my mind but I hadn't really looked into it as I thought the cost and hassle (thinning the paint etc.) might be prohibitive.  However, £66 sounds pretty damn reasonable to me, so thanks for that link Budgie :D

I will now have to start doing some research on local paint suppliers and read up on spray techniques.

Cheers

Hello there, I did a full respray on my volvo 240 track car, white main body and black roof. It took about 3 days and around 80 cans of spray.

I bought my spray from the local discount shop at £1.29 a can for he black and white, £1.50 for the primer and laquer.

I was a cheap excercise in total but I wouldn't do it again, have a look on ebay and buy a cheap compressor or your local ad-mag or free ads, the guns are cheap enough and paint isn't to expensive.

Don't forget to factor in consumables like thinners and sand paper etc.

But it's really rewarding knowing you did the work

Don't forget that if your spraying bare aluminium it will need to apply an etch primer first or paint won't stay on very long.

Watching this thread as my disco needs a spray soon and i was going to do it using the cans from halfrauds.

So now i know not to touch that, i have an electric spray gun, what would i need to do to the paint in order to spray it?

The body work has been sanded down and flatted already, but its been used quite a bit since then so whats best to clean it with to get the grease out?

A few people who claim to be in the know are recommending a HVLP spray system which negates the need for a compressor and is claimed to be easier to use and gives a good finish.

Anyone out there have any experience of this kind of kit?

Complete kits can be bought for less than £100 - £150.

Any comments?

If you don't care about the quality of the finish then roller it with NATO paint.

Okay I have decided to go down the HVLP route and am buying a spray kit:

here's a small ebay link

From the link above I can get paint for £13.50 per litre although they haven't confirmed that they can do Tangiers Orange yet.

Can anyone give a guide on how much paint to get.  I intend to do all the door jambs etc. and inside the rear door.  The plastic sills, and windo seals will all be off so these areas will be sprayed as well.  I seem to remember a figure of 5 litres from somewhere.

I assume I will need thinners as well once again ideas on how much would be apreciated.

If anyone is interested I am keeping a photo log of the progress here:

I bought 4 litres of 2 pack for mine which was more than enough for two coats albeit being watered down with thinners and hardener.

30 cans of plasticote including the roof, plasticote will spray and get results in conditions that car spray would look crap. very easy to spray, very easy to touch up, overcoat etc etc, sprays well on top of a 240 grit quick flat, plastic based so fills minor imperfections very well, mines faded on the bonnet but think that was cos i got it wet and muddy before Id given it a couple of weeks to dry

Total cost approx £150 and so much easier than using my compressor and gun.

Steve

It was seeing your car that inspired me to do mine and start this thread :D

In the end I just couldn't find a plasticote colour that I would be happy with (for 'I' read 'the wife' :? ).  The inside of our garage door is a patchwork of silver, grey, 2 greens, orange and yellow.

In the end I have gone for a spray system and tangiers orange.

I am currently in the middle of replacing the boot floor and will probably get around to the respray over the Christmas break.  Keep your eye on the link above; it should be good for a laugh as I've never sprayed before  [-o<
