Are all 4x4 drivers the same?
« on: October 28, 2007, 00:28:24 »
I think reading this forum spoils you, you start expecting all 4x4 drivers to behave in the same way, and then you witness something that makes you very disappointed.

I was sitting outside on the car park in the Disco while SWMBO was busy shopping at Matalan in Shrewsbury, with the window down I heard a big crunch, which drew my attention across the road to the Plumbing Centre car park to the white 2002 Defender 90 reversing into the front wing of a parked 2007 Discovery.  The collision caused the 90 to stall.

Did the driver get out and examine any damage or dead children that might be trapped between the two vehicles?  No he didn't, he just calmly restarted the 90 and drove slowly out of the Plumbing Centre car park, across the road and into the same car park as me, but outside the Brantano shoe shop.

He gets out to check the rear of his vehicle, and then goes shopping!

I couldn't believe the brass of the barsteward, so just remember, not all 4x4 drivers are the same.

Best thing to have done would be to have left his number and description on the screen of the Disco.
Saw a similar thing last year, told the driver of the car that was hit, and gave him a statement for his insureance. Took a while, but he got a result.

Agreed, my dads car got badly damaged in a car park crunch when the driver didn't stop.

Have you told the police/owner of the Disco?  You should, you were a witness.

A few years ago, I saw an old guy hit a parked car while he was trying to park his.  I left a note on the parked car's screen asking the owner to phone me and when he did, I gave him all the details.  To say he was grateful was an understandment.  I hope someone else would do the same for me.

Sorry, if you saw it happen and did nowt.................

Similar thing happened to the wifes car.
The car was parked outside her work and an arctic reversed around the corner and devastated the offside from the front of the door to the rear lights
OK...it was a wagon and he probably wouldn't have felt a little Peugeot 106 underneath him but if it wasn't for a witness leaving the wagons details on the screen we would have been left with a hefty repair bill :x

Two stories from BTM, of differing degrees of honesty.

1. A few years ago, I was doing overtime, 'moonlighting' in the Transport Department.

I got handed the keys to a 7 & 1/2 tonner, got sent to Supplies (at another off-site location)

Came back & had to drop off at an annex building. The (reversed) approach was through 2 opposing right-angle bends - left, then, right.

Got through the first one okay, but then, caught the front bumper of a Astra with the side under-run bars.
I saw it start to lift in the mirror; "Oh b*gger!", I thought

Thankfully on inspection, it had just left a rust-stain on the bumper, not even removing the pattern on the Plastic

I then had to trace the owner. She was fine with it, pleased at my honesty, but showed me the other side from a shopping trip.
It looked like someone had driven into it at speed, as the front wing was hardly in existance.

2. When they're at the 'Posh PortaCabin', SWMBO usually parks the 'works van' on the decking/entrance side of it.
However on one visitation, she had to park on the other side, someone knocked on the door, to tell her an old lady had gone into the Mondeo & driven off.
Witness gave her the registration & the approximate location on site. SWMBO went up to the shop/site-office & asked.
Manager said "Not Again!!!"

Which didn't sound good!!!!

Joanne found the car & her husband apparantly 'T-Cutting' it
Upon being challenged she admitted it, but said she panicked & wanted 'to go home'

She offered to pay cash for the repairs, but Jo refused, as it was a company vehicle
It was later revealed (by someone who knew her) that she had over 10 claims against her for damages of this sort!!!!!!!!

On a similar vein to item 2, this Ross Floyd column makes interesting reading.

I remember reading that when it came out in 'LRM' & wondering if he'd now been removed from the roads?

Having seen something similar myself I took the details of the person who thought to drive away and left my details along with the details of the person who caused the damage. It was rainging at the time so I carefully put the piece of paper in a plastic bag and tied it to the drivers door handle. I got a phone call later that day thanking me for taking the time to do this and although she had decided the damage was minimal and not worth bothering about she was very happy I had bothered to leave my details for her.

so far my count is.

1 motorbike run over out side the house.

old woman reversed over it in a ford car and then did a runner. passer by got her reg: cantacted the police and was told it was a civil matter and that i should go and see her to get insurance details etc....took me 3 months to get anywhere as it seemed she had done this lots of times,

2@ a lorry took out the side of my 200tdi disco while parked in my street. he left the sceane without stopping even after being told he had hit it....someone left the details of the truck for me.....contacted the company to be told " naa it wasnt one of our lorries...they are not that far south ". urm here is your redg number and he was over the weight limit for this road. so we can go to the police if you so wish"....

turns out they did ave a lorry in the area and they paid all costs. :?  but they did try and get away with it

3. a large van bounced off my disco in my road. they left the scene fast. neighbour got his reg number. contacted the police who said they would send someone round to inspect the damage. 4 hours later and no police. re phoned them and was told that there will be some one along soon. i then asked if it might have possible that they might want to breath test this bloke as he could of been drinking as there was nothng parked oposite my land rover and there was  a large amount of room to get any van through. well tey got it all sorted in 20 mins ....turns out he had a pint at lunch time and was just under the limit.......so i wonder if he could of need over the limit at the time?????

made a full claim on his insurance .

why do people think they can damage someone elses stuff and then just walk or drive off.....makes me so angry
cheers

For everyone??,or just at a certain age, or after an 'at fault' incident???

Just to add a point.

The Mondeo suffered only a dented wheel-arch & scuffed bumper (plus paint)

But, as the thread's discussing - It's the principle of it all (departing without notifying)

A friend and myself witnessed a similar type of event in a car park of a local shopping centre. A numpty brained woman tried to get a Disco into a space that was about 4" wider than the car. She made contact with the concrete column and her nearside front wing and both doors of a small car on the other side. She did this not once, not twice but three times before she realised that she was not going to get into the space

Both my friend and myself took the details and left our contact telephone number under the wiper of the damaged car. We got a phone call from the owner but sadly never found out what happened afterwards :(

Me and swmbo saw an old shed of an escort van reverse into a brand new bmw 5 series a few weeks ago.  Having found the owner of the bmw, given him our details and the reg of the escort I ended up getting dragged into the police station to give a statement.  Fingers crossed they nailed the swine.

Well, I did take down the Defender 90's details, and walked over to the Plumbing Centre and asked who owned the Discovery, and outside I handed over the details.

The damage was a deep rivet impression (obviously from the rear of a 90) in the offside front bumper, and a broken off-side indicator, so the Disco owner was pretty lucky.

I even pointed out where the 90 was currently parked, and the Disco owner made his way over there with his camera phone.

I didn't report the details of the 90 here because it might just be somebody here you all know;

But as I've had the request the 90 Reg was WX02 AWD

If the owner is a member of Mud Club he should be thoroughly ashamed of himself.

HI,

the very first incident involving our disco was himself who reversed into a car in a woodland car park

being himself he left his mobile phone number under the windscreen wiper with a brief note.

it turned out this car was 7 days old and the bloke who owned it burst into tears when he came back and found it damaged!  his wife phoned us and we got it sorted on our insurance - she told us about him crying and then being completely staggered that himself left a phone number  - they were really happy that we had done that.

ok  - we had protected no claims so no skin off our nose but two very happy new car owners!

Just pulle dup on a garage fourcourt in one of the horrible GMC ambulances we were ussing. I reached for the driver's door and just befoe I pulled the handle there was a loud bang, rocked the ambulance and this silver BMW shot off the fourecourt. Belted back in and blues & twos on and chased the woman down and managed to get her to pull over. On lookign at the battle bus we'd lost the rubber bump strip, large amount of paint and a hubcap.

On the BMW she lost her wing mirror and a large amount of paint. Best bit the unprotected wheel nuts did a real number on her panels.

She claimed she didnt realise she hit us, then broke down saying it was hubbys car and he didnt know she had taken it out and wasnt insured!

She got hit for the cost of the damage to the ambulance (being an imported one I dread to think what it was) and I beleive the police were involved so Points too on to of Hubbys wrath.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

I was at my dads fixing his house alarm a couple of weeks ago. I was up a ladder fitting the bell box when I heard a loud crunch. Some women had driven under the rear nearside bumper. I wasn't impressed with her saying "You didn't see us, we are in a rush" My reply was it is my ....car. At which point she offered to pay for any damage. The damage to mine was a scratch on the rear step and a cracked indicator lens.  Damage to hers was a rather deep dent to the bonnet, a distorted wing, smashed headlight and she pulled the bumper off when she reversed her car from under mine. Oh how I laughed

Don't know how if goes with husband and wife but if she's taken the car and isn't insured it's either TWOCing on her part or point on his licence too for lending her the car.

Re the compulsory retest, there is a way of doing it.

In Alberta certainly, you have to 'renwe' your licence every 4 years, iuts a case of going down to the local office and asking for a new one, nothing major but they ask you a few questions etc, takes a few minutes and you are off with a new licence BUT

It means that once overy 4 years all the old people with the spacial awareness of a dodo are taken off the road, as are obvious hazzards.

If you dont do it within so many monts its test time.

*looks at his Canadian Driving Licence* OOPS   Looks like I'm gonna be doing a driving test on holiday :)

Great, so an MOT for drivers then.

Firstly it will help to ensure that newly qualified drivers continue to practise what they have been taught, not drive like their mates

Then it will help to ensure that all those people who think they know better than me just because they have had their licence for 40 years will have the chance to prove it :D

It will also help drivers sympathise with learners a lot more

All drivers will then have an eye test MANDITORILY and the Gov'ty will have the identity card they so desperatley crave.

Insurance companies will then be asking seriouos questions about people who try to insure a big car they didn't take their retest in, and refuse insurace on big cars to people who didn't yet pass their retest.

Oh yeah, and I'll be a whole lot better off :D

My mates wife went shopping the other week and park her golf soft top up in the car park and when she came back some one had knocked the front bumper off and she had both her young uns with her .My mate had to come from work to pick her up as the car couldn't been driven due to the bumper only being fixed to the car by 2 wires for the lights.

Are all 4x4 drivers the same?

Ben you are still entitled to claim from her insurance compay directly, well legally from her in fact.  How long ago was it?  if it was recent then a nice letter from a solicitor might help things along.

This is unfortunatley why it's worth having uninsured loss insurance, years ago my dad had DAS on his policy and they ended up putting a bloke in prison for not paying for a repair that cost about £120

I think it's almost worth installing a camera system in the Disco, with cameras to front and rear, running continuously.

Such systems are cheap enough, and worthwhile if it stops all the nonsense people seem to have suffered.

Some of you may have to keep the audio off though, the language in the car can get interesting if confronted with some of the plonkers we see on the roads.

It would certainly have helped in the prosecution of a minicab driver last night, that overtook me on a the brow of a hill in a built up area with extensive hazard markings, including hashed area for those making a right turn.

Absolutely crazy thing to do, and I passed him two minutes later making a pick up in a pub car park, but what evidence do I have if I reported it?

Nothing.

What would the local Police do with such video evidence?

Nothing?  Caution?  Minicab Licence revoked?  Court? Strung up by his wedding tackle?

They just keep getting away with it, until they grow up or kill someone.

She claimed she didnt realise she hit us, then broke down saying it was hubbys car and he didnt know she had taken it out and wasnt insured!

sorry but this really P+__((* me off,

how can you get into a car, drive it. and not know if you are insured or not.?

I dont think i would be able to live with myself if i killed a young child, or come to that ,take someones wing mirror off.

And if you look in the Court's Attendances in your local paper, there is no short supply of uninsured drivers.Even without license's..

How do they do it?
