I'm about to replace the discs on my TD5 Disco - can I borrow this thread and ask for info on TD5 options too?

Is that the colour of the discs or have you not cleaned off the preservative yet?

YOU CAN PUT THE SPACERS FOR THE CALLIPERS ON AND GO VENTED I BELIEVE, BUT WOULDNT OF THOUGHT IT S WORTH IT AS STANDARD BRAKES I THINK ARE OK WITH GENUINE PADS.

TDi Discos had solid disks, V8 Disco had vented.  Same calliper except the spacers which you can buy on flebay in a kit along with the discs.

Those look like the EBC ones though and they recomend you don't fit EBC pads to solid disks on the front.

Vented and drilled/grooved are designed to shift heat faster, in addition grooved help reduce 'green fade' where the pad starts to gas and the gas seperates the pad and disk.

Without going for bigger disks and callipers I recon that grooved and drilled disks like those, in combination with the pads and vented disk callipers are about as good as you are going to get.

Not all v8's had vented discs, as mine are solid.

3.5 or 3,9?  Vented disks were introduced on the 3.9 RRC

To heck with it - just drop on some 110 calipers and be done.

I don't hugely see the point in grooved discs on an offroader. The purpose of the groove is to shave the glazed pad surface off, thereby presenting a clean pad surfce for the next bout of dead-hard breaking. Really it's only used on racing cars, but for some reason it's become de-rigeur on daily drive motors too. To make matters worse, the grooves collect all kinds of detritus and will cut through pads even quicker as a result.

Following a conversation with the EBC dudes (regarding the brakes on the racer (solid disks and ample) at the last autosport show, you can certainly run their green pads on solid disks, but they will seemingly squeal like a good 'un. Their red and black pads won't make any difference on an off roader (their views) - there's insufficient traction available between the tyre and 'road' surface to use the additional braking effect.

Brakes heating up shouldn't be a problem on general use, so why drill the disk either?

Just my views,

Cheers

The grooved and drilled spots reduce green fade.  Admittedly it's more of a concern on my LSE than Blue which is the one with big tyres and plays in the muck.

I know the claims of drilled and grooved disks - I just happen to think it's largely irrelevant.

Hows about 300 horses in an RRC on standard pads with vented disks? Never been a problem there, with stopping it (running Yoko ATs for info) unless you run outta grip!    Man, then there's an issue stopping her!

As I said, I can't see the point for a host of reasons, but thats just my view.

Its the 3.9, but as long as the calipers move freely it stops quite well.
Problem is, the rear calipers tend to seize a tad if you're not carrying load.

My 1999 3.9 has solid disks and does not have wear indicator wiring, which has never made sense to me.

Probably a cost saving thing then, all 3.9 RRC got vented disks, but then they have dual circuit callipers too.

Each to their own I suppose, I've fitted the EBC pads and disks to mine and I think it stops better, maybe that's just me.  It's not a matter of how many horses you've got as how invisible your car is to other road users

Sorry mate, that wasn't a dig.  Blue is AKA "The Spanish Inquisition".  You know that scared "where the hell did that come from" rabbit-in-the-headlights look you sometimes get from someone that pulled out without looking? well I've lost count of the number of times I've seen that look, usually whilst anchoring up or taking evasive action.

Whups, having reread mine it looked like I was having a pop - which very much wasn't the case - it just came out a bit wrong! Sorry 'bout that

I meant to say that once they've bed in, new pads and disks of the ordinary sort can show an improvement in braking.

For anyone else still reading the thread, another top tip is to take a look at the state of your fluid - that can get a bit 'spongey' as it detriorates. If you are replacing the fluid, despite what the media says, avoid any of the silicon based fluids - they absorb water which makes them go spongey even quicker.

Cheers
