Disco TD5 Off side rear keeps sinking
« on: October 30, 2007, 12:58:20 »
For a while now the rear corner of my Disco has been sinking when parked, what is strange is that it does'nt do it all the time i assume if there was a hole in the airbag it would sink every time the engine was stopped. Is it likely to be a sensor problem, if it is how easily can it be put right, is it just a matter of the garage plugging in their computer and reseting it or is it likely to be expensive.
Also can anyone reccomend a garage that can be trusted with my Disco without ripping me off.

Hi,

We had this when we had a TD5 it could be the sensors but think you may have to change them just to find out, but depending on the age they are prone to sinking at the rear & ours didnt do it all the time either  :?

Whats your location  :?:
John.

likely cause is the air bag, my bag had a leak and didnt sink all the time, the hole was on a crease and it depended on if the car was sat level as to weather it deflated. Easy diy fix should cost circa a £100 per bag.
Dont leave it to long as the hole could get worse and the compressor could end up working overtime to compensate and burn itself out.

Could be sensors, air bag, valve block or unions, although the TD5 valve blocks don't tend to cause much trouble.

Might be worth giving the sensor a clean up and seeing if that helps.  You can check for a leaky air bag or unions using washing up liquid & water squirted around potential problem areas.

There are a number of specialists around who will do a better job of fixing this than a main dealer.  Let us know where you are and somebody will be able to recommend one.

You need to check that the piston on the airbag isn't dirty, they often leak where the bellows fits the piston and dirt can be a cause, if it's been off-roaded in high mode the piston is really exposed.

Washing up liquid will help trace the leak if you can catch it leaking.

It could also be dirt inside the valve block, but that tends to afflict RRC more from what I've heard.

Don't think it waill be the sensor, not if it's only trouble when it's parked.  Unlike the potentiometer used on the RRC the Disco II used a clever feild effect sensor with no moving contacts, so there is no chance of if going open circuit like the RRC sensor.

But you definitely don't want to leave it too long.
