By "new" - do you mean, crated and unused, or rebuilt and fitted? Big difference between the two.

ITS A FULLY RECON UNIT AND FITTED BY A GARAGE (WHO ARE TOP CLASS), YOU WONT GET A BRAND SPANKER FROM THE FACTORY FOR LESS THAN 3K.
AND YES THERE IS A DIFFERENCE, BUT EVEN SO A FULLY REBUILT BY A PROFESIONAL ENGINE BUILDER SHOULDNT START KNOCKING AFTER A THOUSAND MILES.
I VERY NEARLY BOUGHT A SECOND HAND ENGINE, BUT THOUGHT ID CUT OUT THE RISK OF BUYING A DOG, AS I HAVE NEVER BEEN THAT KEEN ON REBUILT ENGINES AND GEARBOXES.
I WILL JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND SE WHAT HAPPENS, IF IT GETS CHANGED THEN HE WILL NOT HAVE A DISABILITY,I MEAN PROBLEM.

Recon/rebuilt ... to me that is the same thing. I assume you were told to not exceed 3000rpm for the first 1000 miles, and to vary the rpm's - i.e. not sit on the motorway at 70mph. Also you must change oil at 3000 miles as well.
That is the advise they give for a NEW V8 (Rover) normally. My *new* RR has the following advice in the users manual :
Do not exceed 5000 rpm for the first 3000 miles (or words to that extent)

YES, REBUILT MANY ENGINES MYSELF OVER THE YEAR, HAVENT FOR A FEW NOW BUT I WAS RUNNING HER IN.
ANOTHER FAULT IT HAD FROM DAY 1 WAS OIL LEAKING, NOT DRIPPING LEAKING FROM SUSPECT THE REAR CRANK SEAL!
ITS WELL ANNOYING AS MY MATE WHO OWNS A VERY RESPECTABLE LR GARAGE FITTED IT FOR ME AND I FEEL A BIT BAD MOANING ABOUT IT TO HIM AS HE DID IT ALL AT COST, INCLUDING THE ENGINE COST.

No warranty with it? For 3K I would be expecting least a 6 month unlimited mileage, even most breakers gives a 3month exchange warranty.
One mans rebuild is another mans steamclean and paint job

thats grim is that. you can do em with the engine in the car though, as long as the crank is good. Dont run it with it knocking though or you will soon have a rod through the side of the block which is a tad more serious.

it has got warranty, i just got the impression that he wasnt keen on sorting it very promptly, but i think my man pehaps mentioned i get the hump with idiots real quick, and hes sorting it next week i think, ive just ordered a new (factory brand spankers) gearbox and transfer box, so can be all sorted when my man fits them for me.
i will not be going up the recon route, only done it once in the past and that was also a problem engine, i still believe recon stuff is just buying someone elses old problems cleaned up.
i know there all re machined and top hatted, lightened balanced, and all new bits, but, they are just never the same as a new one, and i dare bet for not a lot more youd get one, and 100% piece of mind.
this flippin 110 is turning into a megga bucks heap.
