When driving the disco somedays rund perfect, but go to it a few days later and she will not idle. ok in nutral gear. put her in drive and cuts out even when i drive down the road and stop at lights etc she will cut out, when putting her in r and shunt her back she will just die as soon as i hit the brakes. when in n she runs at 800 rpm but in gear she drops to 100 rpm.
but this might only do this two to four times a mth or very few mths but when i go to look at her she runs fine no cut out etc. Has anyone else had this problem. 3.9 V8I 1996 ES.

mate had the same trouble with mine and it got worse until it woulndnt start after a long run now i replaced plugs, leads, air filter and maf sensor  but when she wouldnt start i replaced the relay that stops you starting in gear and now all is well i think that they must get worn out some how and stick in the im not going to start postion.but with that said im no expert and im sure that someone will give you a more technical answer soon.have you checked all the breather system and air intake pipes for leaks or blockages?i always go down the cheapest route first thats why it always takes me so long to find the problem

2 possibilites, either it's running badly and you don't notice 'till you ask it to do something.  V8s have som much torque they will idle on 3.

Otherwise the ECU doesn't know it's going into drive, so won't raise the revs accordingly.  I would expect the ECU to notice the drop in engine speed though :?

had simaler probs with a 2.5 volvo auto did the usual plugs leads filters only for it to carry on checked with a mate he told me to check the egr valve found out this was blocked so removed it and cleand with wd40 or simaler job done run as sweet as a nut so if youve got a egr system check the valve and piping as this could be corroded to

So you've some sort of problem with the fuel supply then :?

Unless your guage is wrong and it's near empty but I think you need to whip the sender out and see what's going on, that doesn't sound right at all.

BTW, if you buy a cheapish tyre pressure guage, the round Halfords one is all brass, then you can check the fuel pressure with the Shraeder valve on the fuel rail, between cylinders 2 and 4 IIRC.
