bought a series 3 swb and fancy a go at trialling but never done it before, do you have to have a roll cage and harnesses and stuff.

Depends what you want to do.
A 'RTV' (Road Taxed Vehicle) trial merely requires that your motor is road-legal (tax, Mot & -presumably- insured)
Also that it has sufficiently strong recovery points, you provide your own recovery rope/strap as well.

There's also 'TYRO' Trials (beginners), these -dependant on the Club- allow 16year olds to drive.
Usually a lot gentler than a RTV

Leave the CCV trials (Cross Country Vehicle) alone for a while

i think i am correct in thinking that there are two standards

MSA
ARC

if you joing your local lr club (who are competitive) you will find out from them what you need.

also there is a regs book telling you what you need/do to do trialling..

dunno bout msa though

that brings me to another issue "clubs" they are so clicky, my local one is ENLROC (EAST NORTHANTS) i was a member a few years ago but was always treated like an outsider. didnt matter what you did they were all in clicky little groups and noone wanted to turn up to anything or put themselves about. all they wanted to do was criticise each other and backstab.

I live in Rushden and trial with both Peterborough 4x4 Club and AWDC.
For RTV you do not need a cage for either club, basically you need an MSA approved extinguisher, 2 throttle springs and recovery points.  P`boro events are very relaxed with sic tests in the morning and playing in the afternoon, while the AWDC tends to be a lot more intense and competitive, both good fun though.  Obviously as a Niva driver I know nothing about ARC rules.

yep i think its the same everywhere, you get a couple of people who are really good and there "HANGERS ON" then you have the clubs "LOADED BLOKE" who throws thousends around and creates his own little club within the club and usually knows someone with a farm which he and his "HANGERS ON" can go secretly. then you get the new people who dont really stand a chance of fitting in and feel like outcasts.

i just wanted a bit of fun with my landy greenlaning, didnt have enough money at the time to do the trialling aswell.

Its a pity  some clubs arent the same.

I've heard so much about how clicky the landy club is that meets in menai bridge that I haven't bothered going .

A mate of mine has a garage and has built a smart winch challenge car and has gone to all their events even sponcered stuff for they and still nobody will give him the time of day so he's given up with them and has been brousing this site with a view to signing up .Likes the idea of playdays where the hardend can meet with the novice and teach each other a few tricks while keeping in all down to earth and friendly .. :D  :D

Hey, if you think 4x4 clubs can be clicky, try turning up as a newbie at a mother and toddler group.

It was the same for me with the 'Yorkshire Rover Owners Club' a few years ago.
I did, however, go to a 'Pennine Land Rover Club' CCV at one point (in between the 2A & the 110) up near Sowerby Bridge & got a lift by a complete stranger in a 90 pick-up for 2miles down the access track to the site.

Now that was an act of kindness I still remember after all this time

I'm a member of the same club and though I agree with Dyf to a certain degree, it's not too bad once they know your face.
Go to club nights about every 3 months or so - usually with the kids who think it's fantastic. Know a few people - whole club seems to know me   as 'the Doctor', despite my never, ever, telling them what I do.
Am considering starting trialling with them this year, just RTV at first and am even considering training as a Marshall. Most LRCs have copies of the ARC etc. regulations - Red Rose do and these are available at club nights.
cheers! 8)

for what its worth i did a few rtv's which were ok then jumped in at the deep end by doin compsafaris with slroc then deciede to do the trials aswel, the main people in the club who made every1 else outsiders have since 1 has been removed & the other cnt be bothered 2 come out to play cos he gets cuffed frequiently,i found that i was made to feel an outsider when i moved from rtv's to trials but when i started puttin in the results & showin the big £ guys with a standard ish 90 its all stoped,

Not all A.R.C. clubs are the same.
The first couple of times you get nothing, but then you volunteer to help or to marshall, then some one needs a navigator, then you're hooked.
I found that if you make an effort then you'll get accepted.

Get's off soap box and gets anorak :D
