Is there a way of losing this? Or is it replacement of transfer box?

depends what you mean by play... are you sure its this and not for example a-frame ball joint?

if there is play i would have thought it would be where the props mount... and would think/hope theres a big nut behind the prop, like there is at the diff end...?

And if you mean backlash then I'd suspect it was adjusted with shims like almost everything else on a LR, the LT230 is IIRC.
