Make your own ... Bumpers & Sliders. Is it possible?

Hello one and all. After a very eventfull days greenlaning around ashbourne I've decided quite quickly I need a strong front and rear bumper, mainly beacuse my standard ones are now scrap  :P

Has anyone got any idiots guides to making your own bumpers and sliders at all, and maybe even streering gaurd. I'm really into making my own stuff rather than buying someone elses. Nothing against paying out but I like the feeling of making my own.

Any help would be appreciated.

It's possible - but bear in mind that you will need to be able to work metal to a very high standard. To give an idea of the stresses these parts are under, the steering guard on mine is a 7mm thick aluminium plate. It still bent noticably when the front wheels fell into deep ruts!

I used to build custom bikes so I can't leave anything standard :lol:

and in the list of things to do sliders are being made after the boot floor

i have a selection of scaffold tube, an old hilux tow bar, and a welder... i also spotted some nice bits of 1/4 plate at work in the "recycling" pile ... might be recycling them into something interesting soon.... weather/time/motivation dependant :roll:

I made my own rock sliders. Main part is 100mm x 50mm x 4mm box section, front tabs (for the bulkhead bolt) are 5mm, and the rear mounting bracket to attach to a series outrigger is 2.5mm. I also had to buy longer bulkhead bolts.

Steve (hairyasswelder) made Rangie a lovely tubular back bumper so yes, guess its possible, he also made her a brilliant roofrack and is now making her a stainless steel snorkel for her christmas present  :lol: think most things are possible if you've got a bit of imagination and can weld  :D

This all stemed from where HAW got stuck on that lane and had to be winched all the way up, near Carsington res. I got spectacularly stuck and wasn't so much towed as dragged up  :lol: , great fun but it highlighted some problems I needed to sort.

I NEED REVENGE ON THAT LANE  :twisted:  :twisted:  and now running MUD TYRES not .......tty AT's
Anything is possible   8)  You just need to balance the time you spend and the money saved  
Stainless tube just 'dropped int my hands'   so a snorkle was a must, will be as much use as a choc fire guard (its a V8  :lol: )
Just need some 2 1/2" flexi tube   and a Southdown top  :roll:
If you want a look we will be knocking around at the weekend
I'll get the 9" grinder out..... sort those approach angles out  :lol:  :lol:

Sliders and steering guard are next on my list  :roll: when time permits  :shock:

I hope to one day have revenge on that lane aswell, but it seems a fair way off  :oops:

One thing to remember if you make rock/tree sliders with box section like the ones on modi's disco above is that the bottom edge of the doors/front wing is curved so just a straight piece of box will leave big gaps at both ends. The commercial ones tend to be curved to leave an even gap.

It was suggested that the best mod for rock sliders for a disco was the remove the exsisting sills and replace them with 100mm x 40mm box section.

Thanks redhand, I'm doing some research at the minute, my plan is to renew the boot floor, sills, inner wings, front floor sections, front bumper, and upgrade where I can with my own home made stuff.
