timing chain too slack or not

ok about 9 months ago i changed my cam on my rover V8 3.9 which also included changing the timing gears and timing chain....

ive just looked at it 2day and there is abit of slack in it already but dont no if its too much????

how much play should there be between the cranck and the cam (in degrees)?????

another words my cranck can move slightly without moving the cam, is this ok???

?? when you changed the chain did you check the tensioner spring and slipper as i had this on a jap motor and had to change the tensioner slipper and spring

When you installed the new one, what procedure did you follow...... :?:  :?:

I would follow that one again and if its out of spec, adjust it...... :idea:

I didn't think the 3.9 had a tensioner? it looks like the chain is so short it wouldn't be needed, also there is no mention of it in the official LR v8 manual.

to be honest i dont know, but, i would not have thought you should be able to move the crank and not the cam for any degrees, that sounds very slack to me.
plus if it doesnt have a tensioner, how do you tension the chain?

The 3.5 & 3.9 V8 motor doesn't have any tentioner on the timing chain.
You have to remove the cam & crank timing gears, put the chain over the gears and slide both gears back onto the cam & crank at the same time. The tention is provided by the camshaft and the crank.



There should be minimal movement in the chain, but I'm not sure exactly how much. You may have a duff chain that has stretched, if you're at all worried about it then change it as they're cheap enough and easy enough to do.  :wink:

glad some actualy knew the V8's dont have a tensioner  :lol: (sorry guys)


in all fairness i dont think its abnormal wear, ive just got to remember that once new parts dont stay new after there used

ive been told that there shouldnt be aproblem with it anyway even if there is abit of play as the chain is always under tension one side so you only get problems on other run....

ive heard some cars can have up2 10 degrees of play and still run good enough to do a 1/4mile in 13's
