hi all, i was under my rangie today sorting handbrake out,when i noticed the shaft that comes out of diff housing (that the prop bolts to)is quite loose!! obviously something is knacked, but what ??.is it a repair or replace jobby.if  it's a replace jobby does the petrol auto rear axle fit a 2.4 diesel cos i got an auto rangie that i'm going to break

If it's a 3.54:1 diff they're all the same.  It shouldn't rattle, the input pinion is supported by a pair of taper roller bearings, preloaded and seperated by a collapsable spacer.  It should be nice and tight, the bearings have a measurable running resistance (this is how they are set).
I think yours is toast, good news, could it account for a strange noise you've been hearing?
