Best off road driving in a film, nominate!
« on: November 17, 2007, 10:43:31 »
Hello,

As car chases have been done to death, how about nominating the best off road driving in a film.

No specialist stuff like Dakar reviews, G4 or documentaries etc, and the vehicles have to have wheels so no tanks or mech warriors etc.

My nomination is "Ice cold in Alex", the one where they drive an army ambulance to safety after being stuck behind enemy lines during a retreat in WW2. The tension is great and its ahead of its time in relation to the "enemy" . I have spent many a Sunday afternoon watching this instead of various DIY jobs.

"Sorcerer" about a load of guys who are driving trucks through the jungle, trucks are full of unstable dynamite!

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UUhJ4rMMeuM

Nothing in the trailer about off road till the end, but in the film it starts form about 30 mins in. I havent seen this for about 20 years.

I know it doesn't really include 4x4's as such, but most of the chase scene in the original Italian Job, is technically 'off road', therefore should qualify, especially the bit where the Minis jump from roof to roof :D

The biggest problem with U-Tube is you get saddled with someone else's dubious choice in music, some good films there though.

Im deffo putting sorcerer on my xmas list, only available as regioin1.

Ill resist the temptation to you- tube till then

Yes, they build trucks from scap and do blow up a big log wiht nitro etc. Cool, maybe even better than Ice cold in Alex.

Also neither film has CGI and all the better for it, use of REAL tension and believable action.

I remember a film staring, I think Roy Schider (jaws) driving an army truck thro the jungle, with a wicked scene where he has to negotiate a very rickety wooden bridge, Brilliant, if only I could remember what the film was called !!!   :?

Just watched last 20 mins of Free Willy. Forgot about the winch action and waffle boards! Ice Cold in Alex is the classic 'off road, movie, but A Bridge Too Far' has a good bit where the Willy's jeep is playing hide and seek with Gerry in the forest.

There's A good scene in Bourn Supremacy, where Bourne and Marie are fleeing the russian guy in GOA, and she drives the truck off a verge and through a field, a small scene, but a good one.

Also "Dante's Peak" has a few scenes, one where Pierce Brosman drives his modified ford? truck through a river and a guy follows in an estate and his car claps out. funny as hell.
