HUMBUG!
« on: December 04, 2007, 11:41:46 »
Left early this morning to get to Manchester for a few days, with the intention of beating the traffic. Got as far as Welshpool when I had to call upon the assistance of the RAC to get me back home, and now I'm getting ready to go into town to catch a train, which should get me into Manchester about 12 hours after I originally left!

Tried to get into 4th gear, wouldn't go in. Tried for 3rd, same. Tried all the gears, same! So I stopped, turned off the engine, fired her up again, and I had gears once more, for all of about 20 seconds. Managed to limp into a layby with some rather unpleasant noises coming from the general area of the gearbox/transfer box, which stop when I depress the clutch. Then had to sit around for a couple of hours waiting for recovery, and to top it all off nicely, roadworks and traffic meant it took us nearly 2 hours to do an hours drive!

I am not looking forward to hearing what the garage have to say about this one when it goes in!

Just got back, having enjoyed the joys of train travel. I arrived in Manchester on Tuesday a mere 12 hours after I originally set off!

I'm thinking along the lines of transfer box, as that's the general area the noise appeared to be coming from. It better not be gearbox, as that was supposedly replaced with a recon unit when I bought the car. Going to take it into the garage tomorrow for them to take a look at it.

Land Rover repair guide, Don't fix anything, because if you do something else always breaks, so fix nothing and nothing will break!!!

Annoyingly while I was away in Manchester, the gf's dad's Disco was taken away by the insurers, as they've written it off. Had they been delayed by a couple of days I could have whipped the gearbox and transfer box out of his!

You'll find plenty out here that do - Mid/West Wales is full of tiny garages that can fix anything, especially if it has a green oval on it!

The more I read into it and think about it, the more I'm inclined to think it's clutch/gearbox related, rather than transfer box.

Think I'll drain the gearbox myself over the weekend, and check for any metal where there should only be oil! May as well do the same with the transfer box whilst I'm there.
