I know he's not a name to equal his peers like; Paddy Hopkirk, he was also later the team manager of stars like, Ari Vatanen & Tony Pond.

But surely you have heard of his company, http://www.safetydevices.com/ the roll-cage manufacturers??

They made some real good roll cages for a while then disappeared I think in financial difficulties but I could be wrong.

Anyones death is a tragic loss and while I didn't know the chap he's clearly offered alot to the 4x4 world as many a LR will still be pootling around with a safety devices roll cage. And as he's been there and done it you can bet a pound to a pinch of wotsit that they will be worth every penny they cost.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Tony a few times over the years, a great guy. A member of Ecurie Cod Fillet - if you know what that is you know what that means if you don't have a look HERE. One of the greats from when rallies were rallies, events of endurance not silly little sprints designed to sell cars.

As for Safety Devices I believe he actually founded it, might be wrong but he was certainly the driving force behind it for many years. And if you really haven't heard of them, welcome to the 4x4 scene cos you must be new to it.Unfortunately SD have bn competing in a very cut throat market against in a lot of cases inferior products and the market just won't pay what a good cage costs so SD have gone under a couple of times over the years. Hopefully in their latest incarnation thy will be more successful UK motorsport just wouldn't be what it is today without them.

RIP Tony - PS loved the tale about the trip to the circuit that you didn't get to do cos you were mistaken for Paddy Hopkirk by a wake.
