Thinking about fitting a winch to the Disco 1, anyone know what is the maximum physical size winch that will fit into the discrete (behind/below bumper) winch mounts? I am tempted to fit a hydraulic winch powered by the power steering pump but need to find out if it will fit!

Using 6mm side plates, my descrete mount has just enough room for an EP9 (593mm wide) with a few mm breathing space at each end. Off the top of my head the inside distance between the chassis rails measured 628mm.

That champion is about 83mm narrower than an EP9 so width shouldn't be a problem as long as the fair lead offset on the mount is suitable.


What is the disco body like behind the grill? On my RRC there is a section of body that will foul with winches mounted behind the grill so will be getting the chop shortly.

so it looks like width isn't a problem, i believe that the hydraulic winch is a bit deeper than the EP9 - how much spare space did you have between the winch body and the steel sheet that the fairlead bolts to?

seems to be a thin piece of steel below the radiators on the discovery, assume its there to help guide the air flow better, may end up fowling the winch.

you'll be lucky if a steering pump is good enough to power the winch, my mate did it and when activated, the belt just slipped on the pulley.... no matter how tight he did it....
He ended up with a pump on the back of the tranfer box.... pto style!

I have a superwinch husky tucked in mine, no probs, I believe the hydraulic ones are a bit bigger really, looks like you will have to make some fine measurements
