Defender Diff's and halfshafts
« on: December 14, 2007, 08:41:42 »
Just a quick question I am buying a arb air locker later onto day. I counted the end of the halfshaft it was 24, (I havent pulled the half shaft out to could the other end.. But I just read on the ashcroft website that on a 200tdi the diff end is a 10 spline so i would need a 10 spline arb locker not a 24, anyone know if this is true? saves me the job of pulling my half shafts out this afternoon.

200 TDi

Front Axle

Standard : halfshafts are 10 sp at the diff and 32 sp at the CV,

Rear Axle

Standard : halfshafts are 10 sp at the diff and 24 sp at the drive flange,

Thanks in advance

10 spline is correct, but always worth a check just in case.

24 spline is ment to be stronger but depending on how you drive 10 spline will be more than strong enough in my opinion.

Agreed.
Always check as you never know what may have been fitted by a previous owner, it only takes a few minutes to remove a rear halfshaft so better safe than sorry. My 1986 ex-MOD 90 was fitted with 24-spline halfshafts & 4-pinion diffs as standard and they are often fitted by people doing a lot of off-roading.

If you've counted 24 on the outer rear shaft the inner will be 24 also. My understanding is that they are the same each end.  This won't have been a standard fit to that car so maybe worth pulling the shaft. Is it disc braked rear? If so this is unlikely to be standard for the vehicle and could be off an rrc or disco or later 90 110.

Ashcrofts will be able to help identify.

I've got some 200TDi halfshafts and IIRC they are multi spline at the oouter end but 10 at the inner.

10 spline it should be but you really should check.

Rears?

Apologies if I am confusing the issue.  Worth checking or checking the axle number with Ashcrofts or whoever you are buying the unit from I guess!

I would upgrade to 24spline whislt you have the chance! otherwise you'll kick yourself in the futre, i dont care what anyone says standard 10 and 24 spline diffs are as much use as a chocolate tea pot*, if you fit a 24spline locker and bearmach heavyduty V8 shafts (£20 each) then you have a pretty strong backaxle.

*Offroad with 750 or larger tyres
if you you can make it i can break it.

If that's all 24 splined shafts cost I'd fit a fully 24 splined back end TBH.

That said I'm running 10 splines and 235/85s and I've never had a problem, perhaps because I've a shed full of spares, or perhaps because I'm careful how I drive :?

You are entirley right about being gentle, however i want to be able to look at something and give it 100%, yes i am in the fortunate position that my 90 is trailered so i dont have to worry about driving home but even still if you can do it for not much money then IMHO your a fool not to :D

Thanks for all the input guys.

I got the 10 spline locker in the end, as i really am not a agressive off road driver.. (ask dan lol) i really prob dont need a locker but i just like the idea that i can drive up a hill with out having to go faster and put the dampers though a rough time, as I have already took the top of one   .

Going to be fun fitting it though never done one before lol hoping to be done before weston Q so i can try it out.

PS where abouts did you mount the compresser?

Fit the compressor well above the waterline and anywhere it wil conveniantly fit.  It's noisey too so not next to your head.

Mine's in the back.

just a update.. fitted the locker and put in the axle but there was a really bad vibration at around 15 - 20 mph.
Tested the diff at a funday and i am well pleased with it.

after a while it was getting worse (about a week) turns out to be the prop shaft UV joint on the axle. (think the balencers have come of and vibtated till its done the spicer in) so i bought a new prop and its fine

Thanks for all the input..
