Before I take a look, can anyone tell me if they have had a problem with thier rev counter fluctuating on their 300tdi, and if so, what caused it? I know it gets its signal from the alternator so that will be my first place to look. It has started to jump around all over the place and has gradually got worse. I'ld like to think i have one of the wires loose at the alternator but i know thro experience things are never that simple.

check the "W" connection on the back of the alternator, nearly always the problem is down to a loose connection on the wire or the crimp connector being loose on the terminal on the back of the alternator
if all your connections are ok then it may be the alternator thats at fault

Hi all,
Mine did that, common problem. It is usually just the wire off the back of the alternator... its a tiny pathetic little wire, and just needs pushing back on! Mine used to last about a day then play up again... in the end my mechanic (who picks the disco up to take it to service/fix) got fed up with it irritating him (would think he drove it more than me... doesn't really go in that often!!) he popped a new female connector on the wire and jobs a good-'un... no trouble since!!
Cheers,
Nat

Gents, thanks for that, You have confirmed my suspicions. Will let you know the outcome as soon as i get chance to look at it. I only fitted the Alternator about 6 months ago so chances are either the coinnection or internal fault. i dont recall it happening before or straight after renewing. As my wife drives it every day her 'fault reporting' skills arent the best!!!!!!!!

I messed around with mine for while and in the end I just replaced the connector, as Nat's mechanic did, and that solved the problem. It's been fine for the last 5 years.
IIRC, it's the black/white wire onto the alt'.

I had the same problem with mine, I just nipped off the old connector, crimped a new one in its place and voila, job sorted - I just wish all LR jobs were as easy.

Check that wire, AND check belt tension, Serenity does the same right after a bonnetload of water as the belt is slipping.
If its a Valeo Tacho, look for bad joints on the back  If its not the wire I'd put my money on that, probobly on one of the capacitors on the back of the tach. Give away would be that it'd be temp related and it may clear/get worse if you slap the dash.
Both Audis have done it, one of the Orions, The Vit and the Metro. Valeo units with dry joints every time.

MMmmm, mine was doing it for ages then I re-soldered the connector on the W terminal wire and all was fine for a while. Then the alt dies on me and I replace it with a pattern part - now the tacho is all over the place. So, I've re-done the wire again and had the dash to bits to look for bad joints all to no avail.
Must be inside the alt I reckon..........
Cant be arsed to strip that so I'm 'living with it' for now..........
