brit lorrys,forign loory, whats faster

hay all,

i was on the m20 today going from dover to orpington,

all the way down the motor way the forign lorrys seem a lot faster then ours, some i was follwing was doing about 70mph,some more,then when following the brit lorrys they were doing 56mph up or down hill,

is this legal as they dont have a limiter on them :?:

Uk trucks are indeed limited to 56 mph, and as far as I know foreign trucks don't have to have limiters fitted.

The speed limit for trucks on motorways is actually 60 mph.  :shock:

Irish and some Scottish trucks don't seem to have limiters fitted either judging by the speed that they pass me sometimes.

ALL european trucks SHOULD have a limiter fitted - thats why UK trucks have them, thanks to the good ol' EU  
And the 60mph is outdated now as close to J6 on the M6 there are scales built into the carriageway with cameras on them so if anything heavier than 7.5t is going faster than 56mph then they are pulled into the works unit between 6+7  :x
I recently got done outside of Chester 100 yards after a  section of dual carriageway i was doing 45mph in a 50 mph limit - but because I was in a vehicle greater than 7.5 t i was over the 40mph limit - 3 points and £60 fine!!!

Stopping distance in a fully freighted artic (44ton) is arording to car drivers that pull out and stop infront of us about 5 foot. but its more like 5 times the braking distance for a car. Just because we have more wheels on the road dont mean we can stop quicker. But empty with engine brake and exhurst brake abs on all axles it and using the dead mans brake so to say. It will stop pritty damquick

And the Dutch! I saw one doing over 100 MPH a while back late and racing for the ferry (one reason the M27 is so bad in the mornings towards the M3 is the E.U. truckers having 'accidents' at J12/13 of the M3 apparently). It wasn't uncommon to have the lightest Scania/Volvo with the biggest engine from the heavy weight end of the range and upped gearing in the 80's/90's...I wonder how many had/have working tacho's too!

One local coach company (Luckett's) owner/M.D. (David Luckett M.B.E.) admitted to me (in writing) that one of his coaches had, according to its sat-trac been doing 36 mph in a 30, but wouldn't tell me what the tacho said, given that the sat-trac only took 12 waypoints along Highlands Road (Fareham) I suspect the tacho was much higher, during the morning walk to school period, the only place it wasn't speeding was past the scamera!

On all of the arctics i drove the limiter would struggle to hold its speed down hill.
I have been 80mph in a loaded truck and trailer down hill before i realised this  :shock:
I was wondering why every one was going so slowly  :lol:
From that point onwards i always checked my speed on hills

Back a few years ago when we lived in Bury St. Edmunds and I worked here in Cambridge, I left work (very late) and headed homewards along the A14, just before where the Little Chefs used to be at Kentford I saw some "funny" lights in my mirrors and eased off the loud peddle, I was in a new Smart Forfour Brabus, (Obviously I can't elaborate to indicate the speed of the truck, but I am sure uou can guess how many digits made up the speed), then no more than 5 miles later it (the lights) were right up my chuff, then, cover me in baby oil and take me from behind if it didn't come past me like I was stopped, I followed, at a point called "Barrow Bottoms" at the down hill section he/she looked like they were hitting 130+MPH and the uphill section past Deputy Dogs must have been 115+MPH

Dutch Flower Wagon (Drawbar, Lit Up Like Blackpool Sea Front)..... He had roughly 45 mins from there to get to Harwich!

I'd bet £50 that he made it too!

Lorries are deceptively fast up to their 56mph limiter - I had an interesting run up from Brecon a while ago behind an empty four axle rigid tipper which wasn't slow by any means - the driver obviously knew exactly how hard he could safely push it and knew the road very well too!

Worst thing that ever happened to UK trucking!
It wouldn't have been so bad if the damned things were built properly but to have the throttle pedal drop automatically to the floor as soon as you go pass 56 and then not cut back in till you're halfway uphill, where the traditionally under-powered UK engine then has to build all the speed up again is bloody stupid let alone unsafe.
You can tell a desk jockey thought them up!
Thing is that people don't realise that these idiotic devices are the single reason why there are so many hold ups while trucks try to pass one another. Rather than throw them away and trust the driver they now start to ban wagons from overtaking instead.
No wonder I got out when I did.

Surely they must have developed some more suitable electricery that that, to act as a governor and automatically up the power at the slightest hill to maintain 56 as long as the pedal is floored?

I don't know about now, but 10 years ago that was all there was! The ideal thing would have been a 'cruise control' type system.

dunno if the laws changed but PC's COULDNT legally check your tacho as they hadnt had training in what to look for..in the event of an RTA they had to wait for VOSA (well V.I. then )to turn up and remove tacho...had an interesting stop about 6 years ago in a 7.5 tonner, got pulled in for a spot check - so theywent over the wagon, then a young PC came to my door and said "can I see your Tacho please" my answer was "NO..." well he went red - coughed spluttered and threatened me with with holding information and generlal allsorts UNTIL a VI guy came up and asked what was going on..when he was told he basically told PC that it WASNT his job to check Tachos - and that If I had given it to him HE (and Me ) would have broken the law!!! needless to say I made a hasty exit and had a good chickle to myself as the pc was still getting an earbending from the VI guy

as an add on - we have 11 Scanias in our yard ALL limited to 56mph BUT not 1 of them does the same speed...yet all are serviced regularly, have their tacho's set every 2 years etc..but still never sit at the same speed  :?

when i use to drive them they were fun i remember haveing no trailer sitting at some lights boy racer sitting at side reving like mad so thought i show him what the power was really like lights went green and his face just droped as he couldent keep up o i liked that old ERF with the old twin split gearbox :lol:

when they check the calibration of the tacho it's to check that the speed reading is more than the true speed but! it must be within a percentage.

if you got satnav go by the speed on that when it's working with a good signal it will give you the true speed. most of our scania's are read 56mph and only do 54mph.
i was done for speeding once  :lol:  i was doing 56mph but when the fine came thought it said 51mph.  :lol:
