Problem? Please Help!
« on: December 16, 2007, 20:48:56 »
A Friend of mine rolled his Disco 200 tdi

The Truck was upside down for Approx 5-10 mins with the engine running!

as my mate was dazed?

So he could'nt say exactly how long?

However now the Engine only runs on 3 cylinders with
Number one  not firing at all?  :?

Before the Rollover this engine plulled like  a steam train with no smoke!  :D

Has anyone had a similer experience with this sort of Engine Problem?
and if so what was the Outcome?

nev you may find one of the cylinders had oil in and locked up causing damage to either the cylinder or the valves when it was upside down

dervs will run upside down aslong as they can get derv to them
all be it alsong as they have a dry sump loob system

now theres two ways of looking at this.....1 its completely f'd i.e big ends, mains, little ends, scored bores ect ect due to lack of oil
or

he has been luck and just bent a rod as the oil that was in the sumpe getting pump'daround the engine, was then being chucked around the place by the moving pistons and crank, which would have kept things nice and wet
ok the top end would have suffered until the oil reched it but, afink he got off lightely and just bent a rod on no 1 cyl
did it stop itself ?
was it locked and need the glow plugs removed to get oil out ?

Thanks Fellas i will call him tomoz and give him the bad/good news
the least he will need is a head gasket kit and a con rod? the most he will need is a re-bore and a Big end kit and the above? Plus Valves?
He is'nt gonna be a happy teddy?

Don't forget if it was upside down the sump oiol would end up in the rocker space, then get blown into the turbo by the breather pipe, then into the engine.

No expert... but can't help thinking it should be pretty easy to figure out an auto cut off switch for this kind of situation.

Petrol, kill the spark and all's well... diesel... I'm not so sure, especially with the whole runaway engine thing.

very simple, mercury switch
they come fitted to certain modles of outboard engines on boats,
they stop the engine from started when it tilted up out of the water
great idea.....that is until you trim it up when in shallow water
doh   , back to the drawing boards lads
we remove them if there fitted, got a few in my tool box

altho i dont find it hard to nock the engine off as it goes over   you no when its going, so common sense says nock engine off and hold on
