Hi Guys,
........I need some help with a re-wiring problem, I'll admit straight off that I haven't a clue when it comes to electrics, I recently bought a dual volage generator for not a lot of money as it "only puts out 110 volts" it looks as if it's hardly had any use and the diesel motor starts and runs as sweet as a nut, BUT... as you'll see from the pics the wiring has been "modified" at some time, (God knows why) the 12v dc out seems to work ok and it does show 110v output on the voltmeter, but as you can see nothing goes through the 110v/230v switch, there are 9 wires into the control panel, looking at the circuit diagram the 2off thinner (yellow) wires, (8 & 9) appear to be the 12v circuit and seem to work ok, the earth wire (green/yellow) (3) seems self explanatory, direct to both socket earth pins and then earth stud on panel, it's the rest  (thicker wires) that are as clear as mud to me, No's 4 5 6 & 7 on the diagram and red yellow green and black, which colour = which number, where does it go to on the circuit breaker and then which terminal does it  then go to on the actual voltage switch, I assume  the wires from the alternator go into the centre vertical row of connections on the voltage switch (No's 4 5 & 6) on my pic, but what then goes from No's 1 2 & 3 on the switch to where on the 230v (blue) socket and what goes to where from No's 7 8 & 9 on the switch to the 110v (yellow) socket.   :?  :? (my head hurts now)
......thanks for any help in advance guys, or alternatively (AND EVEN BETTER) is there a competent electrician anywhere in the Peterborough area (25 mile radius) prepared to do the job for me in exchange for a few beer tokens??? (I'll even bring the Genny to you to have it done  :lol:  :lol: )

Do you have a multimeter? i would try belling the circuits out first before connecting anything so you know what connects with what when the switch is moved, i.e when the voltage selection switch is moved to 110v does terminal 4 connect with terminal 7 or terminal 1.

After that you'll be able to identify which are the 240v connectors and likewsie the 110v connectors.

Hope that makes sense.

lookign at it again i'd say terminals 1,2 & 3 relate to the 110v side, with terminals 7,8 & 9 relating to the 240v side.

As i see it the center row of termianls on the swith relate as follows
4 = Live on both circuits (110v & 240v)
5 = Neutral return on both circuits (through a breaker when swithched to 240v)
6 = Live when switched to 110v & Neautral when switched to 240v

Hope that makes sense - hook up a multimeter on continutiy test and try the wtich and see what terminals connect with each other

Hmm. It has probably been modified because it does not have 30mA RCD protection on the 110V and 230V outlets.

Did it come with its earth stake and connecting cable? This is essential that this is used every time the generator is used for 110V or 230V.

It won't be difficult to fix, but RCD protection is required to be fitted.
If you would like me to look at it for you, let me know. I am in eastern Leicestershire.

Joe90, thanks for the input Joe, did what you suggested and terminal 4 connects to terminal 1 when switched to 230v, 5 to 2, & 6 to 3, so 1 2 & 3 relate to 230v socket and terminal 4 connects to 7 when switched to 110v 5 to 8 & 6 to 9 so 7 8 & 9 relate to 110v socket.

SimonHarwood, cheers Simon, no it didn't come with earth cable and stake, I was planning on using an old piece of cheap/thin jump start cable and an old fishing kit bank stick (as per rod rest/keepnet stick) as a ground if that would be OK, you also have a PM.

The fact is :-
A) You need a volt/multi meter
B) Get someone who is qualified to test it/connect it.
C) Unless the cables have the numbers on them somewhere YOU wont have a clue where they come from or what voltage they are.
D) Someone has really butchered the connections.

For yours and other peoples saftey get it 30ma protected with the correct cpc size and proper earth stake and a test certificate on the rcd to make sure it disconnects correctly.

This isnt a toy it can KILL !!!!!!

You may find that your local hire centre will fix them someone like HSS who deal. We send alot of our Kit via Travis Perkins for repairs and testing........

Mutz......above is from my original post, it is being rewired by a qualified electrcian and it is being RCD protected, I know my limitations which is why I asked for the help in the first place.......and certainly no offence taken, thanks for your concern.
