WHINING NOISE FROM MY 90 - PLEASE HELP!
« on: December 23, 2007, 17:27:16 »
Hi all, got in my 90 (1986 200tidi convert) today and noticed a disticnt whining sound, when the gas is put on it whines and as soon as i come off the gas the whine stops. It's always whined a bit but it was alot more obvious when i started driving it today. I really dont know what it is but i'm leaning towards contaminated oil. Here's as much info as i've got so hopfully u guys can come up with a solution.
It's been standing for the past 10days as I've been abroad, before I left  i had it off-raoding and realised one of the CV joints needed changing so i did that. When I opend up the axle i realised the oil was contaminted so changed it but when i looked again today its still a bit creamy. Also noticed a slight rumble that seemed to come from front axle. Checked all the splines when i did the CV so doubt its those. Does contaminated oil sound like the most likely cause? I used that grease stuff to fill the swivel ball back up, could it be that/lack of? It's hard to isolate where exactly the sound is coming from, could it possibly be transfer box? Oh all the UJ's r ok aswell.
Any help would be great! Cheers guys

does it still make the noise if you dip the clutch while moving ? if it stops then its probley a gear/transfer box or clutch issue

If i dip the clutch the whining stops. I've heard t-box's can cause whining. I know for a fact mine leaks and i havent checked it in a while   , if it's low could that cause the whining?

Its usually the diff that whines have you checked the oil level in the diff?usually the only way that water gets into the axle to contaminate it is thro the axle breather on top of the axle have you been thro any deep water lately ? have you got extended breathers on?when the axle gets warm and you go thro deep water it gets sucked in thro the breather pipe thats where the creamy stuff has come from .have you got a spare diff or could you borrow one to test and see if that is the problem ,sounds like it to me

id be filling the t/box up with oil
id expect the whining to be coming from the output shaft bearings as normal

Alrite guys, just going round doing all the oils now. Just a quick question but i've found a filler plug (same as on the axle) on the gearbox just next to the reverse switch wiring. Do you know what it's for? I've filled the gearbox up from the side filler before (as the hayes book of lies tells you to). Any Ideas what it's for?
Cheers
