200TDi Injector Pump

The injector pump on my 200TDi seems to be leaking - it drips, a lot, all over the UJ on the front prop!

Its hard to see where its coming from, it could be the front between the timing case and the pump, or it could be from between the outlet manifold and the main body....or somewhere else!

I gather a leak from the front end is likely to nacker my timing belt pretty quickly and leave everything somewhat bent!

What do you lot recommend is the best course of action?, should i replace the whole pump?, try and find the leak? Where is the most common failure point?

Other than the unions the leak I know of that is fairly common is from worn throttle spindle seals. I have driven with a constant drip leak from that location for a few thousand miles in the past before getting around to replacing pump. If it is the throttle spindle then the seals can be professionally replaced, or if you do the research there are posts on forums that details what to order and how to do it yourself, though probably not recommended.

I dont have a problem doing it myself, just more concerned about it nackering the timing belt

I'd remove the pump & send it off to diesel bob for recon & heavy duty seals for veg oil.  Also replace the cam belt  ;)

Diesel Bob rebuilt my pump & injector service for 200di.
Pump - £325+vat
Injectors - £29+vat each
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

Bargin! That's what I ended up doing when I wanted to replace mine, bought a whole overheated 300tdi for about £100 just to scavenge the injector pump, then sold the small block on for rebore.

If the shaft seal is leaking, then fuel will leak inside the timing case and drip out of the wading plug hole. Fuel on the belt softens it and it will quickly break. If the leak is on the outside of the timing case, then it's unlikely it's the shaft seal as there's a gasket between the pump and timing case.

Not at all, apologies if it sounded that way....as with all secondhand bits can anyone say how long it would last.
I personally would way up the pro's & con's of replacing a pump (or any other part) with a used item...it's going to have a limited life & you have to go through the whole process of finding & fitting a replacement part at some point along the way.
Also with a used pump there is the possibility that it has been fiddled with...unless the history is known.
As I said...trouble with buying a used pump is you don't know what trouble you are buying.

If you're thinking DIY bear in mind you'll need to either have that natty tool that holds the timing belt in place while you take the pump off or face up to changing the belt at the same time. I was lucky and someone lent me the tools to help but I think they cost about 60 quid which does make DIY expensive. That said I did do it and it wasn't tool awful.

thanks for your reply L90ook.

All I can say is that the pump ws running fine with no smoking when the engine was dismantled - the engine was goosed due to a ring breaking up, but as you say there is always a risk.  The clear 'pro' being that of cost, and being prepared to take a chance for the sake of a couple of hundred quid. I would.

if changing a pump the belt may as well be done at the same time.

However, i am somewhat cautious as i purchased the 90 barely more than a week ago and so far i have a list as long as my arm including injection pump, door lock, rear diff, winch freespool mechanism, winch cable, winch wiring, interior lights, headlights, sidelights, rear tail lights etc etc....and all of those either need replacing or attention or replacing to make them work!  :evil:

EDIT: Thats not even including the oddeties like the wipers going off when you indicate, and the main beam flashing when you use the wipers!  :roll:

Er, plenty in progress, but not a lot of action...lol.

She's coming along, i could really do with a workshop at this stage as its perpetually dark or raining which is slowing thing up - she will be finished soon though! Theres a thread on LR4x4 about the build, which i will update this weekend.

Yep, I've found that everytime i go off roading i break something, or cause a malfunction of some sorts which causes me to be without transport for day's on end. So with much thought and deliberation i sold my 90 in favour of a car more suited to my current needs.

if i could have afforded to keep it as a second vehicle then i would have, and i know I'll get another when funds allow

still gonna keep browsing mudclub as usual, and I'd love to see the D-Lander when it's done
