Baffled!!

Recently done a disco 200tdi conversion on my 90 (old 2.5td) everythings ok except the temp gauge reads too high,needle sits just b4 red, engine is fine not overheating,so I read up a bit and found out that its the temp sender,so I swapped it for one from a defender 200 tdi (prc 8593) and guess what???the needle sits in exactly the same place,just b4 red..............im baffled.........any ideas???? :-k :? :? :?

I had this but mine was a factory 200, tried various senders to no avail so fitted a TIM gauge which came with a matched sender and all was well.

AGREED, I have fitted a tim guage and appropriate sender for my v8 and now have an accurate reading, i find the landrover ones do just sit under the red, they are as good as useless.

chuck the land rover unit in the bin and fit a proper guage with figures on it

gonna try it with a capillary gauge and sender plumbed into the top hose cos i dont trust the wiring either,i tried it with another gauge and as soon as i turn the leccy fan on the needle shoots up to the red,what do they make 90 wiring from?chuffing thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fit the sender unit from your old TD into it.....this is how I cured this fault with mine, the gauges and sender units are matched.....

I havent got the old one does anyone know the part number or has anyone got an old one? :D

I have an old one, but the threads are different on some 200tdi's, phone steve parker, tell him how many threads are on your current one and he'll supply you with one.  Some have 4 coarse threads, some have 6 fine threads!

How much are TIM guage set ups, and where can I get one, do they need to be in a certain temp range for certain engines??

glad i found this thread, i got exactly the same problem, (200tdi converted 90 2.5td) its ok running about local, but as soon as I take it for a long run or work the engine hard, it just creeps all the way up to the red. Changed the gauge to the 200tdi gauge, still no joy, changed the viscous unit too, not a jot of diffenece, was gonna hit it with hammer next, I wasn't sure if it was overheating, but I took the header tank cap off and the was hardly even any pressure in it, so I assume its not overheating.

If your thermostat is working then you should find it sits in one place when warmed up.  This is roughly the temp stamped on the 'stat, if it sits in the wrong place on the guage then either the sender and guage are not matched or the voltage regulator is stuffed.  The later can sometimes cuase the fuel and temp guages to rise sllightly above idle.

If the guage creeps up when the engine is loaded then it's a cooling problem, even if it's just the 'stat is stuck open.

Wheres the voltage regulator on a 90? would this cause the lights to flicker slightly when the engines running?

I cant remeber if 200 and 300 tdi are the same but put a disco 300 in my 90td and chaned the sender to a black top unit and temp reads fine. There are several types which have different resistance and they are only 8 quid each. Much cheaper than 35 or so for a new guage.

tim guages are not dear, my temprtature guage was about 35 quid i cannot rememberexactly, and you get the sender to suit your engine with it. they area good replacement and accurate.

Sussed it!!!!! put a new gauge on (autogauge off ebay) that i had lying around!!! to a 200tdi defender sender unit,and wired tha earth off the gauge direct to battery and bingo!!!!!!!!!! perfect :lol: :lol:

About 80-90 degrees but you cant tell on the standard gauge cos it has no numbers

it shouldnt even need the viscous fan in this weather ,mine runs fine without it with a leccy fan on a  switch but i dont need to switch it on at all,try a gauge with numbers on it I found the autogauge unit(on e bay)running on to a defender 200tdi sender works fine it gives the correct reading,when the top hose is hot(thermostat open) the gauge is at 85 degrees which is correct cos the thermostat opens at 88 degrees (mine does anyway and its a brand new thermostat)

Yeah thats the one,they are a bit bright at night though,try typing vehicle wiring products into your browser,they have some nice gauges :D
