Feedback on our 20,000 mile holiday route Europe
« on: January 06, 2008, 16:49:48 »
Dear All,

Thought I would just add a few comments regarding our recent (six month) holiday which went right the way round europe, including 27 countries, for details of the route, see the map at http://www.getjealous.com/getjealous.php?action=map&go=roodeberg

We took the Discovery TDi, with hannibal roof tent & devon 4x4 awning with a view to camping most of the way round. However due to very bad weather (we left in June so we caught all that flooding the UK got), we did have to find alternative accomodation sometimes.........a roof tent in high winds is no fun!

The car itself did really well - we spotted that the alternator was going to go when we were in Romania, so we called our local Landy specialist (Gotts) who fed-ex'd out the part in 2 days - so we were back on the road in no time!

Other problems were:- over-heating transmission fluid and over-heating brake fluid - both in Greece during the heatwave, whilst go up and down mountains!

We were concerned about the potential to be stopped by the police as a "foreign" car and potentially the need to bribe (as mentioned on other websites particularly about Romania and the Ukraine). These were actually  the only two countries where we were stopped by Police, but on both occasions, the Police officers stated that they did not take the money themselves and that we must pay at the local council offices!

We were also careful with security......but we had absolutely no problems - in fact, we found everyone really kind and helpful all the way round......we even got help from a Luxembourg Hells Angel when we had a cash flow problem!

If anyone is planning a similar trip around Europe - please let me know - as we've done a lot of research and been to quite a few places so if you need any help - let me know!
