Help - Charge Warning Light on 90
« on: January 06, 2008, 21:12:54 »
Hi all,
Been off-roading this weekend and all hell has broken lose with the electrics on my 90 (1986)  :-. . The charge warning light is on when I have the ignition off (key both in and out)  :-k. As soon as I turn the key to the next postion ie. on turn round, the light goes out (note - this is without the engine running). Any ideas? Also at the same time my battery isnt charging when the engine is running (having to jump it), the volt meter is reading low at about 11 volts, i'm guessing the alternator is shot.
Any help towards this mystery would be great  :)
Cheers

Sounds like the diode in the alternator is shot.  Disconnect the battery or it will drain overnight  ;)
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

had same problem about 3 months ago, was alternator, can sometimes just be the brushes that are packed with mud, and when jet washed can sometimes free off. I stripped mine and freed them off but broke one of the brushes, and it was cheaper to replace the alternator than mess about witnh the brushes. £50 exchange rings a bell.
EXCESSIVE USE OF FOSSIL FUELS,
BEATS RIDING ABOUT ON BLOODY MULES!!
(AND DONKEYS DON'T PERFORM IN MUD EITHER)

No doesn't make a difference.
You could try jet washing (no harm in trying) lighly oil & tap with hammer to free bushes/cleam crud out.

Had same problem recently , ordered new alternator, when i went to fit it noticed that the STEEL??? (stupid design)
back cover on wiring which connects to alternator had rotted through at fixings causing the steel cover to lay on the connector causing short / red light, moved cover and no problem , charging fine, now have spare alternator !!

cheers
