Why do we do it?
« on: January 07, 2008, 12:36:16 »
This isnt a dig at anyone that owns a Disco but

WHY?

I've worked on a lot of cars, and I apreciate LR took some 'different' aproaches to many manufacturers. I'll also admin that I've being spoilt with German build quality.

How, have they made a car that rots so damn fast, all three of the cars I look after are the same age, only one is well on its way back to mother nature. I've heard all the arguments but none of them make a whole lot of sense. poor build quality and cost cutting are the only ones that explain it all. I heard someone saying thet K reg Discos are becomming rare beasts, whereas there are hundreds of other cars that have survived that long or longer. Both the Suzuki and Pajero have a few spots but nothing like entire panels going rotten and structural rust.

And some of the deign, why?
Why go to the effort of applying ISO standards to the mounting for the radio and then sticking so close to the dimentions that nothing made much after 1950 fits. Routing heater ducts past electronics that would have been more liable to heat issues than todays kit, and it still manages to cook them!

Cambelts/chains fail, so why make them so much aggro to get at (I know PSA do the same though)
Audi, Cambelt and timing, 15 minutes
Suzuki, an hour, tops
Escort/Orion, again, an hour
None of these require quite the aggor I'm having with the Disco, Yes, the pully has to come off woth the suzuki, but they designed it so just the pully will come off with 8 10mm bolts.

Wiring, its awful, and again, full of cut corners and bad ideas. Mostly things that other manufactuers learned were silly years before.

And the new ones too, granted, Alis 4 year old pug is having issues, but theres 20K price difference between a pug and a TD5 Defender, which seems to be already having issues with low quality contruction.

I'm ranting now, but as my fisrt LR car, I'm wondering why I bothered. Having had a Rover 216 I cant say I'm massiveley surprised but I'd always looked at the reputation that LR have for some reason and wanted one.

Just want the damn thing fixed and gone. Going Japaneese or for a Satana I think.

Its not aimed at anyone, I just cant understand why someone would voluntarilly take on something like this? Let along pay for a new one.

I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.
