brought defender 1 month ago but now find that front diff has been contaminated with water?
Have drained filled, drained and filled but oil still grey and metallic.


Can i complain?
How do i know if diff is <edit>?

It still works,but id buy from reputable well known supplier with 3 months warranty. but don't want fail at 3 months 1 day????????

How do you change swivel oil?

Difficult?

Does this mean that more parts may have been damaged by water?

There are two half inch square steel bolt tops on back of wheel hub(near chrome shiny ball things) one at the top and one at the bottom ,undo em both and drain oil out and fill em with one shot grease instead,one shot grease is in a pouch and there is just enough in one pouch to do one side so buy two,they are about a fiver each,when you are doing it take the front wheel off its easier and put the steering on full lock,warm the grease up a bit b4 you put it in that also makes it easier. Dont 4 get to put the bottom bolt back in b4 you fill it up!!!! :lol:

Its not likely that the diff is damaged unless its whining or making funny noises but CHANGE ALL the oils in the diffs and axles SOON and if you are planning on going off road (under deep water) put extended breathers to axles and t box and g box,and it might be worth giving the dealer a b*****ing cos all this should have been checked if you bought the car from a reputable supplier.............oh and buy a big tool kit you will probs need it now youve got a landy :lol:

They are going to ask you why you checked the diff oil & why you didn't take it back to them to have it checked/changed if you found it contaminated.   :?
I would approach them, tell them what you have done & ask them to renew the swivel lubricants, try to get them to use one shot swivel grease.

Did you go wading in the 90 to compel you to check the diff oil?
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

One of the first things to do is check the breathers - the condensation can build up inside the axle case and contaminate the oil pretty quickly.  Whip the union off the axle and give it the cleaning of its life then blow the pipes through as well - you'll be surprised by how much crud can build up in there and it wont take much condensation to wreck your oil...
Son, life has a habit of kicking you in the ass and i only have vague recollections of when it wasn't kickin mine!

the oils grey
is it silvery grey as thats more like metal filings in the oil or, the halfshaft seals are leaking at the end of the axle casing and allowing swivle grease into the diff oil, which when mixed gives you a grey colour ep90

Thanks for all your advice, and help.

Will do swivel joints this weekend, sounds nice and simple.

All breathers now extended up snorkel. it was while putting new pipe on that i noticed that old pipe had become damaged and was in two parts, so then checked oil.

Have changed oil as soon as noticed problem, then drove for one day, then changed oil again, but still silver/grey in colour so am changing again untill is clear.

Oil is grey /silver in colour and bottom of drain tray is covered in chrome shinney particles.

Did not take it back to place i brought it from as they are 2 hours away. (not brought from main dealer just well known specialist)

I have done no wading as yet as wanted extended breather ext first as did not want to cause damage.

Yes it is the silver Def in picture.

I have done 1.5 thou miles since purchase with bad oil. How many miles did old owner do with bad oil?

Just an idea but if the supplier is a well known specialist give them a call and explain your problems and ask if they will cover the cost of the oil etc and ask if they know the history of the 90. Sounds to me that if there was a damaged breather pipe then its had some abuse and the dealer never checked it over properly. Always worth the price of a phone call!

Does not apear to have done much more off road than you would expect for a 04reg. Pipe was split/cut between front radius arm and chassis, as if it has been pinched.

Have tried to contact seller but person i delt with is away so will try later.

It's possible your change of oil has flushed the internals, if they havn't been done for a while.........

The oil can go grey, even a bit silvery if it's been there ages, but the chrome bits in it :shock:  I'd expect in a gearbox, not a diff.

Shiney bits like chrome! put magnet in had metal filings on it but no big pieces.

Changed rear diff oil at same time (just in case), but all good lovely yellow oil.

Will try to contact garage/seller again tomorrow
