Still got to be the 2 1/4 petrol. 

Mechanically straightforward, just goes on and on and on and on.
Can be fixed with a large hammer, a Mole wrench and a screwdriver by any semi-competent bush mechanic.  Has commonality of ancilliaries with other Rover/BL models. 
Not tempremental. 
Will withstand a good soaking (with a good squirt of WD40).



Either that or a 2.8 Daihatsu Turbodiesel  :lol: :lol: :lol:

Buick sold the rights to that engine to rover/land rover in the 1960's so legally the rover V8s are land rover engines.

had a td but my newish 2.5na blows it away ,been stood at least 9months just fired straight up ,runs sweet and does pretty well on the juice im happy with it  :roll:

I liked my 300 Tdi (in a 'L' plated 110 Hard-Top) It was a wonderful engine, very eager & reliable, mid-30's MPG on long runs

The 3.5 V8 ('E' plated CSW, genuine factory V8. SU carbs &, allegedly, 134BHP) was a great machine for scaring the local boy-racers, if drinking like Oliver Reed whilst doing it.


I do like my current TD5, as it's smooth, eager, economical, revvy (if required). it's only really let down on day-to-day running by its bio-incompatibility, & the positioning of the ECU.



The one I miss not trying was the GMC diesel V8 in a 110

Where is the  4.2SC JAG V8, the 4.4 BMW V8,  the 4.4 JAG V8, the 4.2 ROVER V8, the 3.9 ROVER V8, the 4.0 ROVER V8 and 4.6 ROVER V8.

Oh and the TDV8.

Pah! How incomplete is this list. You can't lump all the V8's together as they have been made by at least 3 different companies. BMW, JAG and ROVER (and of course Buick, but we'll stick to the stamped makers!)

no it wasn't! the td5 was designed by landrover specifically to go in the disco2 they originally wanted a TD6(range stormer engine) to go in there but there was not enough room, this is why there are individual injector pumps on top of the engine, so they could fit it all in. landrover designed it then when bmw took over they put it into production as they didn't have a 5cl diesel but they had a 4 and 6 the TD4 is bmw the TD6 is bmw the TD5 is landrover HA! :scold:

Seems there is much confusion about the Tempest engine. It is a Land Rover engine. BMW bought LR partway through the development.

dont know what it is about the old 2286 cc but it has a place in our landy pride

They're about the same, on our recent trip down to morocco we got about the same MPG in the 101 ambi as the 109 6pot, he filled up twice as often though.  :lol:

I'm sure i read some where that the TD5 was the last true land rover engine that Lr made and it was being tested just as the 300tdi came out.

There was an article in one of the mags (can't remember which) a few months back (can't remember when exactly, useful aren't I?) about the development of the TD5, and it was apparently LR designed.

For the heritage line, the original Rover 2 Litre Diesel from the early days of the Land Rover being produced could be said as the "best" engine.  Why?  It was what the entire line of Land Rover straight four cylinders were developed from right up to the 300TDi.  Santana developed six cylinder engines from that line too (based on the 2.25 petrol and diesel) that have a reputation for being awesome engines.

If you want reliability, economy and decent performance for today's world then it has to be either the 200 or 300 TDi engines.  That's my take on it.  ;)
