My phone doesn't understand txt spk, it wants to use proper words on predictive mode, which leads me to believe that kids actually have to train the phones to spll wrng!

I had a proper PDA so I could type as long a message as I wanted, and receive them the same way.  It's only a conn to make more money from people who know how spell.

Personally I hate txt spk too, I think it's idiotic and bone-idle.

I can understand why it has evolved, but why oh why do people use it in e-mails???  As RRB says, it can only be lazyness. Or maybe ignorance and poor education.

It's awful, and takes a ridiculous amount of time to decipher into English.

If I had my way it would be banned.....

Actually, I could have my way, here at least. Now what does "that" button do

txt spk is wrong.
English is good, not USA English (just as bad as text garbage).

Just need to write more carefully, or get a contract with free texts!

Predictive texting is only any good if the phone has a dictionary worthy of the name. My current one is atrocious and doesn't know a lot of common words :scold:

It bugs the hell out of me when using forums with spell checkers as inevitably they use an American dictionary. Funny how the Americans keep repeating a simple mistake:-k (don't mind me I'm just annoyed with import costs again)

Text speak gets right up my bloody nose! :(

OK, use it when sending a text message on a mobile telephone but don't use it elsewhere :x.... what on earth happened to the use of correct English :-. I have a son of 22 and a daughter of 19 and they thankfully were taught how to speak and write correctly :)

Like most on this thread I hate text speak, even on the mobile. My kids use it all the time and the youngest is 27  :-o

They get all uptight when I reply in English especially if it runs into several messages and they have to keep scrolling down to screen to get to the end

Bring back standard English with proper BBC pronunciation

Acronyms are OK when they are well known. The random sequence of letters and numbers in "text speak" can look as if someone has put in their password by mistake.
Bad grammar can be even worse. So too can using the wrong word when it sounds like the right word, e.g. talking about the breaks on their vehicle (what have they broken?) when meaning the brakes.
Gas Main works are like ants... You never see them in the winter, but once the summer arrives they appear everywhere.

Sometimes it's awkward to have a conversation (if either you or the recipient is somewhere they can't answer the phone) but you can still communicate a message, say for example if you were meeting up after a lecture (i'm a student!), you can't be on the phone in a lecture but you can send a quick text saying 'meet at 12 by the bus stop'....

Just my thoughts on it  :)

As for txt spk...i can usually understand what people are trying to say to me, but my phone (sony k800i) has a decent dictionary on it so i always write messages using full words.
It should also be kept to text messages, there's no excuse for not writing words out when you're sat at a computer with a full qwerty keyboard!

I have heard of recent recruits to the Police that have taken statements from people and the officers have written the form in this 'text speak'. Awful!

so your texts look like this then??

..- --- -.- ---...

I use proper words in texts unless I run into another text for about 6-7 characters, then I shorten it all down to fit. I have found texting has improved my spelling as most of the time I try and work out how a word is spelt by trying different ways with predictive. I am dyslexic and found this to be a great help.

I must admit though when I am on MSN I use text talk alot as it speeds the conversation up and keeps it flowing.

But I dont use m8. Thats a nut and bolt size  ;)
