well my 2 previous 300's (1 standard and 1 'tweaked' )struggled to hit 30mpg even when driven carefully....but to put things into perspective - hubby has done 423 miles today in a 53 plate Merc sprinter pick up - fully loaded and has used 71litres...so an average of 27.11 mpg..not bad seeing as he rarely dropped below 70mph :D:D

mine gets 24 around town. I'll be back after I've been to Tesco's when I'll be able to tell you what it got on a run up to Yorkshire at the w/e.

It's a non-modded 300 auto. Have n't yet checked to see if the EGR has been blocked.

Auto or manual?

The more mods you do, the more likely you are to drop your MPG.

Remember, when you fit the bigger 33's, they will rotate about 611 times per mile compared to the standard 235/70/16's which will rotate about 697 times per mile. So on an identical journey, the bigger tyres will record less miles as your speedo is based on wheel rotation. There is 14% difference.

You can multiply your 280 miles by 1.14 to eliminate this difference. That way you get 319.2 - sounds better already.

My 300tdi auto with 4" lift, 235/85/16 BFG MT, no EGR (etc) has done 21.8mpg (corrected figure) over the past 11375 miles - mainly short trips to work. Minimum tank was was 18.86mpg and maximum tank was was 24.61mpg. Not brilliant but okay for me.

This site might help....

It's about 22/23mpg - it all depends on how much you pay for your fuel!

My 300 with EGR off and a slight tweak of the pump and new injectors with a K&N returns on average 450 miles from first click of the pump to light on.  Its dropped lately as I've gone up a size in tyres but thats explained up ^ there.  I have had 625 but I took forever to get anywhere for weeks and did my nut in eventually!

I have noticed though that the top half of the tank lasts waaaay longer then the bottom - I can get from full to 3/4 over 120-160 miles depending on driving style but I can only average 85-100 each for the last 2 quarters of a tank - weird.

I regularly put red-ex fuel system cleaner through it, I run my tyres at 34 front and 36 rear and it actually returned some of the best figures (not got them to hand though) with the roof-rack and roof tent on and fully packed for 4 camping in Europe last summer - mind you, I was driving miss daisy at the time to enjoy the scenery

I also find I get poor figures using supermarket fuel - tesco is very tempting as there's one on my weekly commute just of the A74, but I avoid it as that first 1/4 figure drops to 100-130 if I do, so I stick to BP as the difference in price is about the same as the loss of economy, roughly and the BP coffee is way better than none in tescos shop

I have the same issue with my tank regarding getting loads of miles from the top half and a lot less from the bottom.

I'm going to stop using Tescos now as well.

Ditto. I get the most miles from when the needle goes above full to coming down to the full mark, hence poorish mileage on this tank as I didnt totaly fill with veg oil. :(

I use supermarket fuel occasionaly to give then engine a change and flush it with the supposidly cleaning aditives they put in, but as a rule I always buy known brand fuel for my own cars.

Always Tesco when it is for someone elses car/van etc. I get the clubcard points then

my m reg 300tdi auto is returning nearly 34mpg using it every day to and from work which is a 22 mile journey each way.on long journeys i get nearly 38.unfortunatly when i put the trailer on the back with diesel on it the fuel economy drops to 29 mpg.this is probably due to the gearbox not selecting top gear until i reach 47 mph

Lordy, 29 MPG towing and it sounds like you're conplaining!

One thing for the folks with big tyres to bear in  mind, 235/85s are baout 10% bigger than 235/70 so you need to increase your MPG accordingly because the odometer doesn't run as fast ;)

It's probably helped by the car being standard and a very careful driving style.  IIRC he cruises at around 55mph and has a nice steady drive to work.

Dont be too worried about your fuel consumption. take a look to the left<<<<<<<, these consume around 2 Gallons per mile cross country and fill up to approx 800 litres. thank god i only have to be responsible for repairing it and dont own it.

Sounds like you have a problem there, I get roughly 25 mpg out of mine on a greenlane run (80 miles motorway and rest country roads and lanes), to put MPG into perspective (although I bet nobody believes me) I have a 2001 Merc with a 5.5 litre V8 engine (auto box), I can get 30 MPG on the motorway and on the run to work (11 miles, 2/3 winding country roads and 1/3 town driving) I average between 18.5 and 20 MPG!!
