took the rear trimoff the osr in the boot and there is a big lump of a plastic box is it the air susspension tank cos the air kits been taken off so do i need it or not

No matey... it's the bass box for the stereo!
If it's working... your in luck!
The resevoir for the air suspension is under the drivers sill fitted to the chassis rail (I think) and is a much more substantial steel pressure vessel!

If it reaches from about 6 inches off the floor to just uynder the window then it's a subwoofer, most of it is full of air but it's quite a good one.
The air tank is apssenger's side, drivers side is the EAS balve block.
Is this car new (to you) then Bob?

got it last year and its been in the lockup all that time
we took the wheels off and put them on the disco as
it's got a nice set of all terains
just getting it ready now for an mot but need a starter motor on it first
then going to put it in for an mot and see wot it fails on then got to fix it
only paid £500 for it
k reg and the tyres were worth that
only got it for tyres and spares for the off-roader
but to good to break up and too good to off-road the way i do the f reg
as it's not got any body damage except two blisters in the osr door
and the air susspension has been removed and coils fitted so no susspension prob's there :D :D

Air suspension is fantastic, I love it, but TBH it's an expensive toy on a £500 car so you're probably better off without it.
That said, my sister's soft-dash hasn't needed anything since I swapped the pump on it last year. It's mine that's needed all the money spending.

Hello there,
If it's a 1993 K reg then it might not have air suspension.
I've got a K reg. V8 and a L reg. soft dash 300Tdi and they both do not have air suspension on them.

Easy way to tell is by the front dampers, if they are inside the coil it was built withou, if they are ahead of the coil it's been converted. Unless someone has gone to the trouble of changing the dampers mounts and the inner wing.

I've just had my head under the front wings of both my toys and the '93 V8 has shocks infront of the springs,
the '94 Tdi has the shocks through the springs.
So my V8 has had a conversion.

going to take the sub out and fit a gas tank in its place so the wife's wheel chair can fit in the back
got to make ramps so i can drive the chair up and into the back as she has now got a powerd chair
and it weighs about 120kg
should get the rangie back from the garage who are welding it for the mot on monday
and need to take the drivers window out of the offroader as the bottom runners are rotted out
so still got a little work todo yet even after the mot has beeen done
also go to do a full service ie oil and filters ect

Bob, 2 things. You don't need to take the glass out to change the runner, but what I'd do is widen it a bit with a screwdriver so it will go over the glass and the rubber, then crimp it in 3 or 4 places with strong plyers like water pump plyers, that will be enough to hold it.
120kg in your boot, plus a gas tank, be carefull you don't overload it, you only have about 500kg payload to play with.

Hello MCer's,
Getting back to the base box,
what would happen, soundwise, if I took out the base box to free up the extra space???
Would there be anything really noticeable to the sounds?
Would the music still work, would postman pat still sound the same?
Can you really hear the box when sitting in the front?
Has anyone ripped theirs out?

We've got 2 soft dashs and yes the box makes a differnece. It has it's own amp on top, so try pulling the fuse out of it and see.
Depending what spec you have the amp for the 4 corners (it's a 9 speaker system) will be behind the glovebox on a softie and on top of the subwoofer on a hard dash. Most hard dash don't have one other than the head unit but the sub always has it's own.
To make matters more confucing later subwoofers were 2 channel and without the correct head unit they are a PITS to wire up properly, which is why one currently doesn't have the sub connected.
My LSE has a 4 channel bridgeable amp in the boot, wiring that up was a pain, but with a low-pass filter it can also drive the sub, that way it's always in synch with the stereo. Sounds excellent, Amp was £50 in Maplins.

Hello blue,
My CD/radio is nackered and I'm going to fit a new Clarion ASAP, by the sound of what you say,
I might as well rip the whole lot out and feed new stereo through the four main speakers.
My main toy is a 300 Tdi sotf dash, The donor is a 3.9 V8 hard dash.
I bought the V8 to break and use bits for the 300 Tdi but the V8 is in such great condition (better then my 300 Tdi) that it would be a shame to break it.
I was thinking of whipping out the full leather interior and fitting it into the Tdi but it looks like a lot of electrical work.
My plan B is to get a none electric set of front leather seats.
I've got the V8 on Ebay at the moment as I've not got the space to keep both.
About two days to go now and it's at £250!

Ron you'll find (like I keep doing) that so many bits are different between even late hard dash and soft dash, it's a bit of a PITA.
If you rip out the stereo and go aftermatket then you'll find the sub a bit difficult to get working unless the head unit has an output for one, I found that connecting the input to the sub amp into the rear speaker wires not only made it too loud but caused me other problems too. For some reason the 2 channel sub can't just be connected to the 2 rear channels either, it cancels itself out.
Seats, I fitted electric leather to Blue, it's not that hard but starting with memory seats is not the way to go. If you have an ECU for them that works then that's great (want to sell it ;)) but they are unreliable.
Half of it does the mirrors, you just don't want to go there at all :-. and other than the memory function, which is over rated, I'd just wire them up as electric.
All they need is 2 live feeds to each seat and one earth, each live feed needs at least a 20 amp fuse. Then you need 2 switches in good condition and if you are removing the memory then either the wiring loom out of a non-memeory seat or a bit of a re-wire.
It's worth doing though, I find the leather more comfortable, the mechanism is stronger and more reliable and you've probably got heated seats too, all they need is a 10 amp supply and instant warm bum :dance:
