Torchwood
« on: January 19, 2008, 18:58:47 »
Was anyone else disapointed by the first of the new series.

Not a prude but 10 minutes in, while eating my dinner I did NOT need to see Jak shoving his toungue down another guys throat, I mean come on, lets at least get the story going first.

Was liek a Dr Who episode from the 80s with some random homosexual references thrown in to pretent it was an adult show :(
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

i was so looking forward to the new series of Torchwood and then it all went gay
Captian jacks gay
the aliens gay
and the bloke that called ianto ( the one that makes the tea and stuff ) hes gay to
on the plus side Toshiko's got really Hot, shes a babe.
why don't they go the all the way and paint the range rover pink and have a Teddy bears on the back seat

the fight scene was good but would have been more funny if they would have had a bitch slap fight

I have to say that opening fight sequence was far too predictable (the kissing bit especially). Russell T Davies seems to have let his enthusiasm for having gay characters get between him and writing a good story. I'm not homophobic, but really feel he needs to stop going for the "shock" value of blokes kissing and get on with the story.

He's in danger of turning into a parody of Dafydd from Llandewi Brefi...

At least if he does this time around it might be funny  ;)

In all seriousness though, it's often been the "job" of science fiction to address contentious issues and hopefully make people reflect on their own particular thoughts.  Take Star Trek TOS for example,  the first interracial kiss on television, addressing genocide, treatment of prisoners etc etc.  Even if Star Trek has subsequently lost the plot and blame it all on aliens[1]

Sadly, one thing that people seem to have forgotten is that this particular issue has already been confronted and therefore doesn't need to be done to death anymore.  Personally I couldn't care if captain jack was straight, gay, bisexual, trisexual, omnisexual or had three knees.   Whilst it might be an integral part to his character it shouldn't need to be explained every five minutes.  Then again, neither does his being immortal, or a former time agent...

Hmm...  I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that it's perhaps not that he's gay that's the trouble, it's the fact that Torchwood just isn't very well written :(  The characters are so poorly defined that any of them that actually have a character trait which might make them remotely interesting has to prattle on about it for fear of them being upstaged by the extras.. or the props[2]

[1] you're gay?  it's because you used to be the other gender but now you've had a slug transplant, oooh woe is me... personally I preferred babylon 5's approach which was just to show two of the main characters (both women) waking up in the same bed and having a conversation as they got ready for duty, much more matter of fact...

[2] let's face it, in a warehouse battle with the little hamster like one, the other bloke chap and a palette, you'd be watching the palette as it has more personality.

Yup, that's the episode which apparently "dealt" with the issue of homosexuality, not sure how it did that, but hey ho :)

Yup, always noticed that, particularly in US sci-fi stuff. Two women kissing is apparently fine, two blokes  [-X

Hehe,  I'm of the impression that it doesn't matter whether you're straight, gay, undecided or technically neither and am therefor refusing to comment :)

Good for you. If we had a decent government, they would revoke the amnesty on homosexuality, and send the lot to the stocks.

Pl-ease! If you have to have that kind of ideas, at least try to express them with a minimum of respect for the rest of the world. Would you object the same way if it was two women kissing? Or if it was a heterosexual couple?

Thankfully, we are not in the Victorian era anymore (although rumour has it that most of the era puritanism was pure fachade) and if someone's cup of tea is someone from their own gender, that's their problem.

I do agree that it is a bit over the top, but IMHO, that's more down to the lack of background on the characters than any kind of statement from the writer.

Erm, I just watch it and don't give a stuff about any crap involved... I choose not to watch the (IMHO) crap bits.

I guess it's like those that have to have a motive for records as well... I listen to them and either enjoy the sound or not.

Life's too short to get the hump about telly! Sky... well, that's a different story...
